Speilburg- Tests and 10 Second Bumper

Speilburg's tests and Bumper

This entry will cover my tests I have created and my 10 second bumper, where this will convey my experimentation, techniques and processes, on this entry I will be covering what I have recorded and how I recorded it and the significance of each video as each one shows a progressive stage into this segment of the journey, doing a 10 second bumper with multiple tests based on the classic man's Nobel creations- Speilburg.

Here is my footage below:-

Test 1

This test here, is of my dinosaur illustrations, on this Test I was just experimenting with colour, I was experimenting on the use of different tints of red really, just to see what I can create and see what I can experiment with. For a first test, I quite like this piece, it is very simplistic but effective and also has a unique aesthetic as I was seeing what my footage would look like with different tints of red, from the dark reds, scarlet reds to a really light and pale red- using the Hue Saturation tool via Photoshop. I also wanted to experiment with different blend modes also to see what my imagery would look like, which fir a quick experiment burst I think this has worked well and enjoyed experimenting with, I did this test more as an intrigued curiosity if anything else really.
For this piece, seeing as it was a brief piece where I just experimented with colour and blend modes, I used the continuous film setting on Imotion as this was a quick moving image piece which there wasn't actually any actual movement in the dinosaur itself other than the mouth because I wanted to try creating an animation of the dinosaur raring from the dinosaur having a closed mouth to open and closed again and repeated this pattern... this movement I created using the manual setting so I can capture the movement of the dinosaur's mouth frame by frame so the dinosaur is gradually opening its mouth and closing it again. Though id' say there was faster movement for the colour transformation part of this test.

Test 2

This text here I created was of a dinosaur eating the word blurt, which I thought was quite a good test, I liked the visual movements in this piece, I like how smooth the movement transitions is where the dinosaur gets to each letter, I found this test interesting. Only a few things I could say could of gone better, was the screen size when I filmed this test... should have been 16:9 really, as well as that I would of said to maybe be more experimental with my motion image concepts and maybe make the video more exciting. Like near the end of the video has more exciting concept to it, I would say I wished id film the footage better I can't lie. With this piece I filmed this footage using both manual and timelapse section, on Imotion where I have used the manual setting for the motion for where we find the dinosaur movements and for the animation, where the dinosaur is eating the word blurt, I like this as I created it as a bit of a metaphor because they say the words "eat your words" which is an old phrase 1670  by John Ray's first found in English proverbs... which I can take the meaning of this phrase is when you say something suddenly, the can come across as wrong or rude etc, in the sense is what the word Blurt means, is to say something suddenly, so I am giving the metaphoric message of the eat your words kind of thing in a creative way, by creating this test where the dinosaur is simultaneously eating the word Blurt. I also used the time-lapse mode for the footage at the end of this test, where I have experimented with patterns, colours and blend modes, in a continuous representative.

Test 3

ET, this clip here I basically used as a test but I cant lie is my favourite test out of each of these tests on this blog entry, I love the transitional movements in this test particularly, I love the use of different colours on ET's eyes I think that is very effective and works very well, I love the use of the bike going over the moon, to make it reference the original movie as that is an iconic scene in the movie. I love how the moon changes colours and tints also, I found this video the most exciting test out of all of these tests on here, I feel my experimentation shows more here, I have developed skills using illustrator, to draw the imagery and through the skills of creating motion graphics and experimenting with colours, blend modes etc, I like how this test shows a more creative and more interesting moving image, as I feel I have managed to create a parody of the original movie but using a more contemporary aesthetic using cartoon variations of the characters which I have recreated via illustrator, you will also notice the use of the hidden 4, the channel 4 logo which I find well and truly effective and I think works well, because if you look back on some of the channel 4 idents, you would notice that the 4 is hidden somewhere in their videos, which is where I found the inspiration to hide the channel 4 logo in a sense where it isn't too obvious in the reading side but also so you can still spot it, it was more me trying to be clever with my ideas, weather or not it worked I don't know. I think the only things I could improve on with this test is to maybe try and make it slightly less destructive, in the sense that this clip has a lot of animate action going on which I think is good, but I feel sometimes people may say it's destructive, like where there is a lot going on sometimes you'd be distracted by the action of the 4 and some of the distraction on the eyes on ET. But I personally like it, I feel the thing I needed to improve really was how I filmed this test, keeping the camera still, and turned the phone on its side then it would be 16:9 footage automatically, which I didn't know about at this point, as I did this test before the final Gondry stuff.

There is a really heartfelt quote I found on this youtube video that was an interview created in 1992, near the end of it Speilburg is answering a question says himself about this movie which I can relate to when seeing this movie myself, and feel the need to mention
"Sometimes I think statements like that are pretentious themselves because its sorta says you know, art is serious and art can't be move you- art can't be a bicycle with ET going across the moon , that can't be art, you know because it takes your heart away along with it to the sky and makes you feel like a kind again"- Speilburg

Here is the youtube video, you may recognise this video from the first Speilburg entry, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-96-lAfagow but I had to add this quote in, because it adds to my inspiration for my artwork. as I hope to try and do the same thing is to create a heartfelt piece of motion graphics in a more contemporary way, making you feel like a kid again, as is another reason for my cartoon footage
Which is more to the reason as to what I wanted to include this concept into my work I found this an inspiration to try to recreate this amazing, Iconic scene in this test and for my 10 second bumper, it makes the imagery with speilburg's classics more special and represents this artist in a much better light.

I hope I use some of this footage in. my 10 second bumper piece as I found this test to be a favourite of mine, maybe even segments of this test. For this footage I used Imotion to create this footage, I filmed each section separately, by filming ET's eyes change colour and moving into the animation which you'll find in the bumpers, but I filmed that using the time-lapse mode because its a continuous framing recording you can see the transformations of each colour from one to the other- using the time lapse film mode, I then filmed the moon with the C4 logo the same way but experimenting with blend modes as apposed to the hue saturation way- with he ET bike flying over the moon, I filmed it using the manual setting but each part I filmed I filmed as the same footage, so same movie on the app which I then edited Via Premiere Pro to edit parts out and arrange the order for this footage to look the way it does. I filmed the section of the bike via the manual setting on Imotion, where the bike is  going owe the moon as I wanted to film this section frame by frame so the movement looked cleaner and slicker.

Test 4, shark

This test piece I also hope to use a couple of segments of this test in my Speilburg 10 second bumper, it was also an enjoyable experiment, as on this piece I kept simple and followed my idea from my brainstorm where the shark from Jaws comes into the picture, to symbolise and represent Speilburg's classics, which for this one was to get the shark from jaws to eat Indiana Jones- but this piece I think has worked well, I really like the visuals in this motion graphic piece I think it's simple but effective and is a more creative way to experiment with my imagery, on this test specifically,  I was just experimenting with the shark, again experimenting with the use of colour and the use of different blend modes, I hope to develop this test to add to my 10 second bumper, as I have previously stated. for this piece I feel I have created a more creative, contemporary cartoon like interpretation of the Jaws movie in my own original parody intake on Speilburg's classic movies.  I feel like this piece has a surrealistic aesthetic to the shark because the character is recognised as a shark but the movements and the shark itself has a cartoon snd non realistic characteristic which you'd find within this piece. This test piece here, I have filmed using Imotion using both manual and time-lapse setting, by filming this test piece, using the manual for capturing the shark entering the scene and then time-lapse for the colour changes. One thing I would add, for words of improvement, is the fact that sharks aren't ground animals... so, why isn't there a waves or water in the backdrop? though I say that... having said that I have created a cartoon interpretation and they do say a cartoon can do anything the greater wants it to, and it adds more originality and contemporary appearance to my animation.

Test 6
This test here, is basically where the shark from Jaws eats Indiana Jones and I created this footage inspired by my brainstorm from the beginning of this segment of this project, this piece here I filmed using Imotion- using the manual setting to captivate the motion of the shark and Indiana Jones's movements smoothly and in a clean and slick way. Therefore the animation's movements would look subtle but ensure the frames would work well. I like how I made the shark chase Indiana Jones and then how I made the illusion look like the shark had eaten Indiana Jones and wins back the hat. This piece will be one of the main parts if my 10 second bumper I will create.

Test 7, Shark & Hat

For this test, I have developed my ideas on the shark experimentation by including more action to the shark, I have done this by animating the shark eating the hat, in which I have filmed the animation using Motion  where I filmed each part manually frame by frame, slowly moving the hat from the shark's mouth to the shark's head, which I personally think makes a exciting touch to this animation and works well  with the shark, it gives a more comedic and exciting action of motion graphics to my animation work. I experimented further after filming using the manual setting I then changed the setting to time lapse and basically for the parts where we see the shark go multi coloured I then used the Hue saturation tool via photoshop, where I was able to motional change the colours of my characters, which I like, because it creates more ambiguity, because it isn't your typical kept in the box kind of imagery and has a more contemporary aesthetic which then gives my work more originality- which I also like about this test. I hope to use this within my 10 second piece.

Speilburg 10 Second Bumpers

This section for this entry consist of my 10 second bumpers, the first being filmed in the 4:3 footage and then I recently learnt the 16:9 filming footage and then filmed using the 16:9 variation and adding my Roget Rabbit illustration to my footage. The idea of my animation I found inspiration from Speilburg's classic movies, by researching what his most known movies were and decided to make a 10 second bumper basically a mashup of Speilburg's movies combined together as a character collaboration in a 10 second bumper trailer.

10 second bumper. 4:3

This here is my first attempt out of two for creating a 10 second bumper where I started to put some motion footage together and editing my animation, using Premiere Pro, making sure my footage is bang on 10 seconds and to make an animation with each movie I have researched. The only things I feel I could improve on is to include the Who framed Roger Rabbit footage and could improve by filming my footage at a ratio screen size 16:9 so my footage is at a wide screen standard TV size as this size, was the standard tv size back in the 80's when TVs and computers were first made, I feel having the standard screen size for my animation would improve my animation as you can see more action in the space of a shorter time.

10 second Bumper Animation- 16:9

This 10 second bumper here is my final Speilburg Bumper animation, this animation I like much better because I went along with my improvements I mentioned from my first attempt for my 10 second bumper. that I include each of my illustrations in my animation and that I film this footage at the ratio of 16:9 setting and continued editing my animation footage via Premiere Pro and again this animation I found inspiration from my research and watching some of Speilburg's movies myself to help. me create this 10 second Bumper. For doing this animation I have started to learn the qualities of using the 16:9 ratio as apposed to 4:3 I have learnt how to put together a fairly fluid animation together to not necessarily have a complete narrated structure but to try using my ideas taken from my brain storm and combine them together in one piece of animation, allowing it to be easy to understand and recognise by including my parodic and pastiche variation of me creating my illustrations of Speilburg's classic and create my own footage with his baseline inspiration with his characters for me to Create key ow. animation footage with my own recreation of the characters and make my own footage, by combining the characters together to create a narration from.

My Sketch of ET: The Extra Turrestrial

Because of this quote from the interview I feel that the target audience for this piece I would say my target audience is aimed for teens and the age range from16-34 year olds, people who like the nostalgia from the 80's classic Speilburg movies and I also wanted to pin this animation to the. younger teens also because I like the idea of making people feel like kids when watching my animation and the fact that my animation is all cartoons I feel that it is nessicary for my animation being aimed to a more varied audience so its an open audience if anything, but I feel that people who grew up when these movies were released and watched as children I feel would most likely enjoy this 10 second bumper for nostalgia also. Though I think younger generations are likely to enjoy this footage also.
