My Speilburg Illustrations

This entry is going to cover my illustrations I have created for Speilburg's 10 second bumper animation as well as to cover the test animations, reason as to why I am talking about them on here is because I intend to show you my progression and development though this part of my journey of the project. I did this section of my project, fairly early into the Blurt section of this project, where I started to discover animation, how the process of animation works, how to get used to using Premiere Pro and recording footage, to draw the imagery ti which I started off looking back at my brain storms and ideas and then started to create illustrations, using illustrator and then practise animating with them to see how they'd turn out as well as to show my journey.

Here are my illustrations for a Speilburg Tribute to the classics, I drew illustrations of the shark from Jaws, ET and there moon, with the bike. I drew the dinosaur from Jurassic world & Jurassic Park,Indiana Jones with his hat and Roger Rabbit!  Here is my imagery below.

THE ACCURACY!!

It sounds ridiculous I name this caption the accuracy but I mean, look at the accuracy- on the left is ET on the original movie and then on the right is the illustration I drew of ET, I would say for a more cartoon like representative of this image I would say the accuracy is basically there, but in my interpreted representation of ET, I therefore think this piece went well reflecting back on the image on the right.

The Extraterrestrial

ET Illustration: I hope to include this illustration to my 10 second animation text bumpers and use this illustration to experiment and show off what I have learnt with this illustration, I wanted to include this illustration in my animation, because I feel ET is one of the more known movies Speilburg has created and I can imagine ET in my animation may allow people to recognise my design concept for this animation.

Pink eyes
Blue eyes

A change of light

These two images I create after coming up with the idea from my brain storm, where I came up with the concept of hiding the channel 4 logo in the moon with ET's eyes either rolling or to change colour and instead I came up with the idea of changing ET's eye colour. for the sake of experimentation and exploring different techniques and processes. I didn't want the channel 4 logo to be shown in an obvious light but at the same time I didn't want to create it so you couldn't see it at all- almost like a hidden Easter Egg kind of thing, the point of the image is we often associate ET with the moon, which is the concept I wanted to create on these illustrations to try and paraphrase the movie by creating a pastiche illustration based around that idea, but in a cartoon variation- rather than CGI Cartoon and motion graphics. I wanted my imagery to be recognisable but created in a different way. I experimented with ET'S eye colour, I liked this idea because ET is an alien and makes me think in the eye of the alien they can do cartoon traits almost seeing as there not completely human, therefore I thought this character's eyes can change colour as well as to create a unique concept to ET, it also helps create the contemporary pestiche version of ET. Which then also adds to my imagery having more originality to my imagery, I hope to feature this idea in my animaton tests for this artist.

An added concept I wanted to add was the bike going over the moon, I love this concept because it adds to the ET movie reference to a T, as I have referenced the character, the moon with the channel 4 Logo and ET himself and the bike is the icing on the cake, I see that bike and instantly say ET. it is an iconic moment in the movie and is in the majority of ET movie posters. therefore I wanted to add that concept to my illustration to feature in my animation in my own parody like way but paraphrasing the key components of the movie, ET to include in a 10 second animated footage.

Indiana Jones Illustration

For this illustration I recreated Indiana Jones in a cartoon variation which in this illustration I think I have accomplished, I found an image on google images, of Indiana Jones and I used that image for a guideline to give me a rough idea on how to create this illustration of Indiana Jones, but with my illustrative, cartoon like aesthetic I bring to my illustrations. With the cartoon/realistic character- I like how I have coloured in this illustration giving my character the archeologist explorer kind of survival look to this illustration, like his hat and clothes for instance look like he is wearing the camoflauge which isn't exactly what his clothing kooks like but I personally prefer this concept to my illustration and adds a sense of unique and originality but also still addressing the character from the original movie because I wanted my interpretation of Indiana Jones to be similar to original character but as a cartoon intake... I wanted to give my character a survival explorer camouflage  kind of aesthetic, as it kind of gives off the explorer archeologist kind of characteristic which is what Indiana's character profile is like I said I wanted my illustration to make sense to the original movie, after finding the research through illustration and movie descriptions I wanted my character to correspond to the description of the original movie, I wanted  to incorporate this character in a 10 second animation and test.

Indiana Jones change of Blend modes

This piece here, I basically experimented on the Indiana Jones illustration, where I have had an experiment with the use of different blend modes when I was putting animated footage together on Photoshop, and I used The hard mix blend which is basically a way to merge your imagery together experimenting on different effects on separated layers to create a dynamic effect so it looks like the footage is more dynamic and can make footage more exciting. Hard mix basically adds the RGB editing on an illustration, basically an add on the reds, blues and greens, which is why we see a more bold use of colour in a simplistic format. Which I think seeing as it looked unique and shows my experiment tap techniques and processes I wanted to see what blend modes would work well with my Indiana Jones illustration in a case of curiosity really, to see what my imagery would turn out like putting another blend mode over the top of the original image or in other words onto of the blend mode normal, I felt as though in terms of experimenting this image works

Shark Illustration

This illustration, I have created is of the shark from Jaws, creating another reference to a Speilburg movie classic, Jaws, I wanted to draw this shark, because I wanted to include this image to my animation because Jaws I would say is one of there more known movies that Speilburg has created therefore I wanted to incorporate, jaws into my animation. I wanted to get the shark doing an action seeing as this shark is supposed to be like a killer shark, for my animation idea, I wanted the shark to eat one of the more human characters and seeing as I've draw Indiana Jones I was planning to get the shark to eat him and wear his hat. Anyway, when I created this illustration I wanted to try and make this character look as much like a shark as I could and I used one of the Jaws movie poster as a guide for me to draw my shark character as well as to colour in, I like the shape of my shark illustration I think it is recognisable that this illustration is of the shark from Jaws, but I do think my shark looks more green than grey, which I originally thought sharks were grey, as opposed to green so in a sense I do think it looks unique in that sense and therefore I can say it is a parody take on the shark from Jaws but created in another interpretation, which in a sense gives the sense of originality and creativity into my imagery. I even asked a peer if they recognised the fact that I created a shark without any description, and this feedback below says it all.

(Feedback, from friend outside uni)
I am glad someone else recognise my illustration of my shark character, it made me feel reassured that what i have drawn looks fairly realistic in my own cartoon like interpretation of a shark.

Roger Rabbit

This piece illustration is of the classic illustration of the 1988 classic movie Who framed Roger Rabbit, on one of the iconic scenes where the cartoon rabbit, Roger- gets handcuffed to Eddie, I wanted to include this because after studying Speilburg's movies, I recently got Disney Plus and ironically this movie was one on the channel, so I gave it a watch the first time for curiosity and found this part of the movie iconic and easy to recognise the characters in this illustration, I think I've drawn Roger rabbit more accuracy than I thought. using an image of this scene on google images as a guide and I drew Eddie as a cartoon without the facial features partly because I tried adding facial features and I felt it ruined the dynamic of the image at the time, but I feel perhaps if the guy had a face, had a nose, eyes and a mouth the image would perhaps improve the illustration further. I will admit seeing as i've worked on this illustration later on this section of this segment, therefore when you see my next entry on my animation and tests, you will only see this illustration in the Speilburg 10 second Bumper.  I can see two faults with this illustration, that one, the stroke line on the hand being in the handcuffs is a different thickness, which bothers me madly now that I have noticed it and on the strap of the dungarees on the rabbit, isn't completely coloured in and the thicker black stroke by the yellow button has some red coloured in there, which again looking back at this illustration I have only just come across.
Here is some feedback below from a couple of people from and outside the uni:

This feedback I can agree with about the hand, but because of this feedback it made me realise other details to critique constructively myself so this feedback was useful to see.

Dinosaurs from Jurassic world movie,  I found the footage from a YouTube trailer, anyway these illustrations I got from that trailer that I screens hotted I used as a guide to help me draw the dinosaur, to get the outline and the basic shape, format and perspective at key really. Here is the youtube trailer footage I screen shotted below:

Jurassic Dinosaurs
This illustration here originally was three dinosaurs at different angles drawn separately but on this illustration I move the imagery from illustrator to photoshop to get the pattern, by doing that I remembered early onto my course about saving your imagery either as a paintbrush or as a pattern by going onto the edit tab on the top left next to File and then go to the options called define paint brush present, which means you can create your illustration as a paint brush and there is another option below saying define pattern, which means you can use repeated image and use your imagery as a pattern, which I had to relearn to remember this as this was taught to us a couple months ago, I got a bit frosty with my knowledge on that part till I relearnt it by experimenting. For those who don't know, you find you can put your pattern on a layer, you have to right click on the layer you want a pattern, there should be a box full of photographic options and then find pattern. in which you can change the size of your image so the image repeats like what ive done here and then you can zoom in also, depending on what you want to do. I found this technique very useful and I hope to incorporate this technique in my work also.

Dinosaur Closeup Perspective

This dinosaur close up apologies for only photographing the dinosaur as a closeup, but I wanted to show the different dynamics on a closeup perspective verses a full body image perspective to show the different representatives but this dinosaur was the first illustration out of the two dinosaurs I have drawn, it is full bodied by the way. Anyway I used the imagery above that I have screen-shotted as a path of inspiration to draw these dinosaurs I wanted the shape of my dinosaurs to at least look like dinosaurs rather than the next Pokemon... anyway, that was where the inspiration came from with this piece.

Dinosaur in action
I then created this dinosaur with the mouth open for showing the other perspective of the dinosaur roaring and well just opening his mouth. I like these illustrations, this one more than the illustration above because you can see more that is a dinosaur as apposed to the image above, which looked like it could be a dragon maybe, though I cant lie this dinosaur was supposed to be the main dinosaur from Jurassic world, to be perfectly honest with you these dinosaurs don't exactly look like that, the top dinosaur looks like one of the vegetation dinosaur and the other one here does look more like a t-rex just not the same colours or aesthetic as the imagery from the trailer.  this imagery kind ion gives me a more child like aesthetic as apposed to a Jurassic world kind of look to it which does suggest this animation I plan to create is going to have a younger audience aesthetic, which may not be such a negative because It is my twist, it is my interpretation and is more of a cartoon like take on the CGI that Speilburg and his team has made.

Which having said that, it may not be such a negative, because it could encourage other age groups to watch the programme Blurt- so Blurt becomes a more popular consumerism as it is aimed towards a more varied audience as opposed to a specified restrictive audience, to also include and  younger teens as well as older teens, to appeal in the eyes of students also, for educational purposes, learning about art and film history and other interesting things.
Which is why I creating this imagery, using a cartoon like aesthetic, in a way that has done me a favour as it has enabled me to expand my audience for these animation test and bumper I hope to create with these characters.

Here is some feedback from a friend outside the uni about my dinosaur imagery above.

Here its the classic man himself

This here was just an added experiment which you may come across on some of the Speilburg practice tests and maybe the 10 second bumper, like I said this piece here was a generic experimentation where I experimented with Pattern, different blend modes and colour really, just exploring further with photoshop seeing what my imagery would look like as a smart file from illustrator. Seeing what I can create really.

Stay tuned to see some video footage of tests and a 10 second bumper with some familiar Spilburg characters and illustrations in which is all to be continued...
