Animation Experimentation

The idea for this animation weirdly appeared on the top of my head after eating a bagel... don't judge me! As well as using the similar concepts to the amazing story generator to help me come up with this animation idea.  But I have to sadly admit to you, I haven't got a  storyboard for this animation seeing as it came out from out of the blue but I can tell you what it's about.

In a blunter this animation is a use of stop motion and 3D animation featuring lego people and playmobil action figures... Seriously... Lego and Playmobil... so five years old. Yes I know that but it helped me create some half decent animation, without me having to draw anything, because between you and me this worked like a dream seeing as my drawing skills aren't the best in the world. Besides it made sense to use those figures at the time, this has helped me open the blanket for exploring other types of animation and not just working with flattened objects or 2d creations I've been producing. I wanted to try out a different animation technique.

The narrative of this animation is almost double hatch storyline, the first being Children casually play football, all happy days. till the moment a bugler cops a skateboard and steals one of the kid's processions for something to do seeing as he had nothing better to do in his time, but to cause travesty and trouble to a innocent game of footie. That turned the stakes of the game as out from no where the burglar's mask magically blows off the faces if the earth into a Christmas gift to mini Santa from big Santa after mini Santa ate a croissant. the croissant worked like a vou you doll meaning if you ate the croissant a curse will unleash meaning the burglar's mask was full of curse and mischief. meaning the when the police crew heard about the situation all the kids remember was the nasty man wore some kind of mask. therefore mini Santa was guilty and well you can guess what happens to him on this jolly holiday? Mini Santa spends Christmas inside the gates of a prison cell.

This pretty much sums up the animation. hopefully it didn't give too much away, before watching the animation.  In fairness I quite liked this Narrative I randomly came up with as it is different but kind of works. as this piece kind of works as the narrative is kind of split into two halves and then all connects the dots at the end of the animation.

Seeing as this animation popped up from the top of my head, I would say the idea behind this animation was one, just a test of resources and what else I can miraculously Put together I. the space of a couple days, using motion again to film my footage and then to use premiere to get used to the idea of editing footage using premiere.

In all fairness, some hit movies get made using lego for animation, such as the following:

The Lego Movie: Made in 2014
This movie was about the life behind the lego action figures, the big lego city coming to life, where we find the typical hardwire builder enjoying his days as a general builder, suddenly changes to a ground breaking hero, after finding a crew to join him,

This movie was most defiantly aimed for a much younger audience from would stereotypically  say was aimed towards ages 3-10 I would say and to younger families. Not only because of this movie being made from lego but because the concept of the Narrative for the lego movie is aimed for children and younger fsmilies, stereotypically speaking. Despite all that I feel this is a clever way to create a movie of course this movie did well with the box office, but I feel the way this movie was created, filmed and put together was just clever and had inspired me to try using action figures and lego people in my animation that you'll soon get to see.

The Lego Batman Movie: Made on 4th February 2017

This movie is basically a reinterpretation of the Batman films but using lego and 3D animation. Created under the influence on the 2014 Lego Movie after that went successfully for the younger audience.
I feel that when they made this movie we see Batman to be best suited for teens and adults in their
30's-50's, I feel they were trying to open up the suitability of the Batman Sagas
to a younger audience seeing as it is very action pact with very simple dialogue and a summarised narrative to follow so youngsters can too can enjoy the Batman movies.

The sequel to the lego movie made in 2019
Finally we have the sequel to the lego movie, which in all fairness I can't tell you what this movie is about from the top of my head, but I can tell you from google's perspective, which is "the citizens of Bricks-burg face a dangerous new threat when new Lego DUPLO invaders from outer space starts to wreck everything in their path, the battle to defeat the enemy and restore harmony to the Lego universe takes emmet, Lucy, Batman and the rest of their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds that test their courage and creativity"

Despite not having a clue as to what this movie is about as ive not seen it, as personally its not really my cup of tea... (aimed at a different target audience) Young children and families.  I Still admire the creative use of animation behind these movies. I like the idea of using lego as an animation technique personally I find this approach clever and well incredible.

After really getting to grips with moving graphics and animation myself and  currently discovering, I humbly show more respect to animators, editors and all the background people behind movies as what they create is incredible, 9 times out of 10 you can't lie to me and you watch these films and you don't say look its so in so actor... from this movie, or whatever when watching movies I admit I do. My point is I am beginning to open my respect to the background people nobody says wow look what these people created to make this movie successful, point is movies aren't just successful because of the performers. It is also the other ingredients in the movies.

The crazy yet incredible thing is not only isn't films they use animation for lego but in video games too. I admit going on about gaming is a bit strange but there is a couple reasons, One being the way these movies I have referenced above most likely wouldn't of been invested or created if it wasn't for the gaming franchise, creating the classic adult films as lego games for a younger audience to enjoy, which again is basically a synapse summarised explanation to what the films are about, which Is which pretty much what they have addressed in these movies above also particularly with the lego batman movie.  I am far from a gaming kind of person myself but again they have used animation, moving graphics, FX and all sorts of edits to to create these games also which is the second reason as to why I have suddenly gone on about the lego games. Like these games below.

Lego Games

Isn't it insane as to how many of our classic films we adults watch can be transformed into creative lego action pact video games so a younger audience can enjoy these classics. there's lots of them. Such as
  • Marvel Games
  • Star Wars... still with absolutely terrible text arrangement... sorry, I can't help but mention, I had to switch the game off as soon as I saw the text. I must admit, but from playing the fame as a kid I really enjoyed it because It told you what the starters films was about in a much simpler narrative suitable for the children.
  • The hobbit
  • Indiana Jones
  • Jurassic world/park
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Harry potter
  • Batman
  • and most likely many more. Who knows what they'll create next.

Anyway, moving swiftly onto my work, this below will show you my footage of my animation showing how I have filmed my animation. These are more practical tests and showing my journey process for filming my final cut to this animation. I can't lie to you, there is a lot of video footage, I apologise in advance but there was a lot of filming to create this animation.
When I was creating this animation, we had to start isolating from the UCA sadly, this is due to the outbreak of the dreaded Covid 19 AKA Corona Virus, never the less I still somehow managed to come up with animation footage whist in isolation. Anyway, here goes nothing. Hopefully you enjoy what I've put together.
Seeing as there was no use of drawing or imagery, there is no footage of imagery I have created.

The video footage

The videos below, is basically footage I have filmed to create this animation. I will pre warn you and say there is quite a lot of video footage for this animation. Some of it is video practice and some of it is footage I have used for my animation.

This video above is an example of video practice, where I was experimenting with 3d figures to help me put my animation together.

This video above  is another example of video practice, but with this video if I remember rightly I believe I have used some of the footage from this video into the animation.

This video above, was one featured in my animation, the really frustrating thing about this one, you can see straight away that I have used the auto setting for filming or in other words, the filming was being put on the time-lapse setting, the really agonising thing about this video is you can see my hand in various sections of the video which is really frustrating and a good example of a what not to do in the world of animation and film creating unless you're doing a drawing or process in time-lapse mode. In this case, the hand in the animation is a No! So I will need to edit this section of my film so you can't see hands featured on this clip, so it can feature in the 30 second animation.

The really agonising thing with this video and the one below, is the fact that they were filmed up right as opposed landscape, that really bugs me! Not only that but it just makes editing the video footage above, and below a little more challenging as I have to rotate the  footage so its all up the right way round so when you see this featured in the animation, it will flow better with the rest of the film.
Anyway, the footage above is where I started to use lego people as inspired by my references above. I wanted to use a variety of action figures, in all honestness these figures were in a toy box outside my room so it made more sense for me to use these figures along with the Playmobil figures too. I was trying to experiment on the figures and characters I bring into this piece of animation.

This short clip above, does featured this 30 second animation, but as you can guess I had to edit sections that feature hands... for the simplest reasons unwanted hand footage is frustrating. This short clip features two coppers showing off doing stunts on their police bikes,  just thought I'd add this kind of jovial section to my animation

this video above and the video below, feature somewhere in the animation that is the only spoiler I will give you, i'll let you watch these two pieces of footage.

This video below is where a lot of my footage for my animation has come from
basically a visual representation of someone getting arrested really. I quite liked this clip was there was a lot of action going on but to a point where the action was easy to  make a narrative from.
Which was the whole idea of this clip.

This footage was another video of animation practice that I did feature in the animation in the end only very briefly. seeing as the animation time if year was Christmas time.

My Animation

This  video below is the animation itself, again I do wish I filmed the footage off premiere onto phone better seeing as for some reason this blogging site won't allow me to put film footage from premiere onto this site, i'm guessing for data protection reasons. Or ive got to discover how to do it.  Anyway, I can learn from that.

I can say I like the visuals I have included in my animation to make my film more exciting. I like the way ive managed to edit my animation, using voice recorded fx and sound FX from Zapsplat Also. the more I look for sounds on that website the more reliable I am finding the fx.

I feel how I am adding visual edits is improving, meaning that visually my animation is looking more exciting and much more action pact. Something I feel I could improve on is to create the moving image myself without being as reliant as to using gifs on google images. I did that to try and add some mph to my animation and then it hit me and I feel for the next learning hurdle I tackle is to adapt my animation and try to add some visual effects of my own, which I hope to achieve in my future animations.

After showing this footage to my tutor he suggested an artist for me to look at named Michel Gondry, to look at some of his white stripes work, at first I didn't understand why Paul suggested this artist to me, till I had a look at some of the youtube videos and seen on one of his videos he has used lego to create the visuals on the video, by creating pattens, characters etc all from lego bricks, which I thought was a clever idea and has made a potential artist and a possibility of a feature for the Blurt section of my project... all will be revealed in time.
I don't want to give too much away!
