What Is a Logo?
Logos
In this entry I will be looking into different logos that already exists, the iconic logos- the logos that make us go wow. The logos that give the big companies we come across today use as their identity. As well as examples of logos I personally like and why I like them and of course I will be defining what a logo is and the purposes of logos.
What is a logo:
I would define a logo as a way of branding a company or a product for instance, this maybe for a business company like a gym or something, having an identity which maybe using maybe a single word or a little icon to give them an identity. You can also have logos for products also, such as items for packaging, for branding such as the Cupa Chups lollies for an example of product brand identification logo. or there is branding for a company or place such as Thorpe park for instance.
Here is a much simpler definition for what a logo is, from my trusty friend google: "a symbol or other small design adopted by an organization to identify its products, uniform, vehicles, etc" "The Olympic logo was emblazoned across the tracksuits"

Definition of a logo Found from this link https://www.logobee.com/feature3.htm
What exactly is a logo?
"A Logo is a design symbolizing ones organisation ... Logotype is a graphic representation or symbol of a company name, trademark, abbreviation, etc., often uniquely designed for ready recognition. You may also think of a Logo as a simple visual mark to identify your company product or service."
"Now days, the most popular and successful companies continue to say that "simpler is better", especially today when everything is moving so fast you have less and less time to impress your customers. So it has to be done in a very stylish manner yet remaining conservative so that its easier for the eye to catch and the brain to memorise your logo design."
This statement is also what I also came across from that link above, there is some truth to that statement on the paragraph about the most popular logos. as most people like logos that are subtle, simple but to the point. Which in all fairness I think is how logos like the Mc Donalds logo does so well that's just a yellow M with a red backdrop- they kept it simple but effective its so iconic because its simple, the reason why I think logos work well if they're simple is because its easy for people to remember the company/brand.
I personally love and favour the Fedex logo as from what you've discovered from the links and mr reaction time video the Fedex cleverly plays with Negative space by putting a sneaky arrow between the E and X, which I find really clever where they've played with the concept of white space but I find it more clever because Fedex it to do with shipping like amazon but the arrow is pointing towards another destination like the E is delivering to the X. I just love it!!

The current Mc Donalds logo
![]() |
As this brand Mc Donalds has been known for decades and thanks to our
modern day technology and generation changes the Mc donalds logo changes ever so slightly giving it a cleaner and slicker look to the Mc Donalds logo, so it had a simplistic way of identifying itself in a more sophisticated way.
Like that statement found from that link Simpler is better- This Image above showing the Mc Donalds logo history is a true example to this statement simpler the better... less is more because you look at the first two logos "1940" and "1948" are abit much in my opinion for detail, the 1940's one, I take one look at that and well get fed up with it as the title is a bit long. The 1948 logo I can see an improvement on seeing as there is a background colour to the logo but I still think its too much for a logo, I think there is too much going on in my opinion there is text at a variety of text styles, as in I feel some of the text isn't as legible as It could be. I like the progressive development to the logo 6 years later, where it just says mc Donalds but it is very Kelloggs! then in the year 1961- where they started using the letter M for logos with the red text, with he use of Helvetica- which is a good font for the current day Logos.
The 1968 logo I can see progressive improvements to this logo but moving the position of the type "Mc Donalds" which in all fairness I can't lie I like this logo as it is fairly similar to the current day mc Donalds logo accept with the type- which I am guessing they've kept the idea in f- based off the previous design but played with negative space. Then moving onto the simple but effective, as they figure the use of the letter M worked well on representing Mc Donalds identity, so they started to develop this logo using the M symbol with a black shadow giving the 3D effect, which I quite like. then the 2003 and 2006 logo are the 2 mc Donalds logos I have come to know whilst growing through my childhood years. the 2003 logo I feel is much more slicker and simpler than the other logos which I feel has worked well, but it is quite bulky... so they adjusted the logo ever so slightly and made the letter M slicker and thinner. which I think works better and looks smarter in my opinion anyway but I think there is one issue but that might just be me because of the backdrop is white on the original image, prevents legibility Yellow on white is a NO NO- In other words Don't do this: Yellow. Which I think when they created the current logo they came to realise that was the ultimate issue with the 2006 logo and so they added a red backdrop to the logo so the M is more legible and is still easy and iconic to identify as mc Donalds we know today. who knows maybe in another 5 or 6 years they may change and just the logo even more, yet I am in doubt that currently needs changing.
Anyway, what I am trying to get at is the fact that as our generation develops we learn that logos work best and most popular these days are because of the words "Less is more" "Simpler the better!" as I can say each logo on that sequence just gets better and better for each small progression as the simpler and subtler the logo is the more iconic and easy for the general public to remember Mc Donald's identity much faster as I look at the first six logos and would look away and not bother, where as if I sae the bottom four logos for Mc Donalds I could just look at that logo and go "Ah look Mc Donalds" the way I see it is imagine a business man is on the train to a business meeting doing his everyday routine- if he saw the 1940 or 1948 logo he may look at that and not take any notice, where as seeing as the logo have too much going on- he has no time to read it and has better things to do in his day, whereas perhaps the last 4 logos he would look at that logo take two seconds and he has seen the iconic logo, In which is there to ultimately to attract and custom and make the brand easy to remember, of course the man sees these logos and go ahhh I remember that M, because it isn't wordy or too much to take in at once, it is very iconic... and may consider getting a mc Donalds meal after his meeting on his lunch break as the logo is captivating to the eye of the customer/general public's eye and therefore go to Mc Donalds. It's All an advertisement kind of thing that graphic designers should consider, as well as consider target audience is the way to grab the audience's attention.
Anyway here are some of our current iconic. logos I find do the job of attracting an audience and follow the rule of "Simpler is better" rule. Such as the following logos below:

Here are some examples of the current say logos that already exist!
It's even got the Channel 4 Logo on the image.
These are examples of some of the iconic logos we know today that make us go WOW and make us remember the brand.
https://bestlifeonline.com/brand-logos-secret-messages/
This website above is great, it teaches you the hidden meanings on logos which already exist, which I found this site ages ago when doing the previous project, just out of own personal interest. I found a couple of these straight away and others I admit took time but because of these logos have hidden meanings I can't help but have a liking for.
Here is another link I like showing hidden meaning to logos below: https://theultralinx.com/2016/11/16-secret-messages-in-popular-logos-that-will-blow-your-mind/
Here is a youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ReBpP1UdmQ Look at this video.- there is a comment he says I disagree with as a wannabe graphic designer is, "Who cares about logos, who puts this much effort in creating logos"
(but yes, sorry its reaction time, (Its a video more aimed towards teens... but... he shows you the hidden messages in logos. figured you'd prefer watching that to the article, but up to you.)
The Top 10
There are many logos I like and find very iconic and I felt like picking a top ten to talk about as I felt that If I speak about loads of them, I think I would personally bore you so Here are my top 10 favourite logos that are already existing today and why so I thought if I pick 10 examples as this blog would be easier to read and less yawn fest.

10) Converse
![]() |
| The Converse Logo |
This logo I like, because it is simplistic, the symbol is captivating and catchy and the typeface works well with the logo. It makes the rule simple but effective. with this logo because its for sports clothes and a sports brand, the brand itself has clothing aimed for youngsters to adults but the logo itself I feel teens and adults are most likely to find this logo more appealing, because it looks sophisticated and the symbol of the logo is very iconic but simple.
9) Cadburys
The Cadburys Logo
This logo cadburys I like for the use of the typeface as it is simple and the C looks like a swirl, almost like chocolate is being stirred. I would say the best target audience for this logo is aimed towards children because they stereotypically like chocolate and additives, not only that but the logo itself the lettering is very swirly I think it'll appeal most to the eye of the younger audiance.
8) Beats
The Beats Logo
This logo, beats I like- I like the simplicity to it, I like how they've played with the concept of negative space with this logo using type, (Bauhaus 93) by the look of it. which you can't dis the font of Bauhaus!! also love the fact that the b on the logo symbol looks like an earphone, that works so well with advertising Headphones, that is something I haven't noticed. To be fair I think the target audience for this logo is best aimed towards teens and adults in their 30's kind of age range I feel will like this logo because its simple, sophisticated but this logo is simple but effective and hasn't got too much going on, seeing as this logo is for branding headphones, which is something I think people around that age range would most likely like most. Which I feel is an added reason as to why I like this logo.
7) Le Tour De France
![]() |
| The Tour De France |
The Tour De France, logo I like, as what the link and the video have already mentioned, is there is a hidden message which creates an added meaning to the logo, as there is a yellow circle... and the O in tour as the back tire d the U as a seat and the R as a cyclist riding the Tour de France, which I felt was really clever and has made me like the logo for the fact there is a purpose to the logo sonf creates a subtle meaning to this logo. Of course I would say by the fact this is a French logo I would ideally say this logo will interest the eye of the French general public, but I would for obviously say this logo is the best audience is towards cyclists mostly because the le tour de France is a cycling event... plus by the hidden message of a cyclist within the logo clarifies the audience for this logo in a much more meaningful purpose.
6) Disney
![]() |
| The Disney Logo/Type |
This logo, now... you cannot find a hate to`! Disney is a pure classic. I love the films, series and even the production of products. to Disney so I cannot possibly leave this logo out! Anyways, I like the typeface of this logo as it looks like it is Walt Disney's hand writing almost seeing as his last name is Disney I wondered if the logo design was his signature as the Walt Disney font has is a font to its own which I personally like. Anyway, I think that children are going to find the Disney logo the more attractive and will find it easy to remember but I think Disney in general like I said in a couple entries ago I think Disney is aimed at a varied audience and Disney is a very iconic use of entertainment so I think may people will know what the Disney logo is, I don't think there is anyone I know who doesn't know what the Disney logo is.
5) Toblerone
Anyways, this logo I feel will capture the eye the most to the older end of the younger audience, because of the use of colour but because this chocolate has honey comb and nought/nuts in it I feel as children are more prone to allergy to nought or nuts or dislike the taste of them which is then making me think the brand target audiance to an adult audience, maybe on the upper end of our generation would more likely find this logo appealing. I personally like this logo because of the clever use of the symbol of the logo with the bear.
4) Adidas
![]() |
| The Adidas Logo |
This logo, the Adidas Logo I think I am being bias because I like my sports gear anyway and I like Adidas over other sports brands like Nike etc, but I personally love this logo because the symbol of the logo is very simple and quite sophisticated. I think it works well with the typeface below the symbol of the logo- Lowercase Bold Helvetica. I have such a fondness of this logo wjiocj o think is part of what has attracted me to the Adidas sports brand- pretty much the majority of my sports gear is Adidas.
Therefore I would say similarly to converse that the target audience for Adidas can be varied seeing as there are clothing for youngsters and us adults. Though I think adults like us would most likely find this logo most appealing because of the logo having a sophisticated edge to it and like I mention with "Mc Donalds is simpler the better" I think has applied with this logo. Besides I think this brand is one of the more popular sports brands and adults like us are most likely to wear this kind of sports gear.
![]() |
| The Amazon Logo |
I like this logo for the simplicity of the logo because it is simple but effective, it is iconic and everyone remembers this logo. because of the simplicity and sophistication to this logo, I like the fact they used the arrow on this logo, creating a metaphoric hidden message saying they sell and deliver products from A-Z to your door kind of thing.
I think this logo is very well known across the world but I would say because of the sophisticated look to this logo and because of the hidden meaning to the logo I think the target audience for this logo is aimed towards a teen and adult range of audience.
2) Toyota
![]() |
| Toyota Logo |
This logo to begin with I thought was just a boring typical car logo nothing tp it, then I come to get to know shaping to logos since the start of studying this course has mad me realise there is something clever with this logo weather this was intentional or not I found the pattern in this logo (on the symbol) secretly spells the word Toyota, which I think is really clever.

1) Fedex
I personally love and favour the Fedex logo as from what you've discovered from the links and mr reaction time video the Fedex cleverly plays with Negative space by putting a sneaky arrow between the E and X, which I find really clever where they've played with the concept of white space but I find it more clever because Fedex it to do with shipping like amazon but the arrow is pointing towards another destination like the E is delivering to the X. I just love it!!
(Me being extra geeky, when I saw this and found this out it genuinely made my day!!)
Anyway, I think this logo would most likely be best aimed to an older audience, maybe people who have companies and who wants products delivered to them maybe business people though I would say specifically for this logo I think like I say this logo to be best appealing to the upper end of our generation, though having said that if people have an inner geeky side like I have then they may find this logo appealing because of the use of negative space with the arrow.
(If you cant see it by looking at the logo above, Look art this image below!)

Logos are even shown for Enertainment purposes, for a band name band branding, for film and TV and branding in the field of entertainment for example, these images of logos for music, films and TV below.
I have heard of the following bands from this list and logos:
I think this set of singers/band are rock or punk rock bands and I think the target audience for these logos are heavy metal rock fans, punks, teens, younger adults that are over the 20's/30's I cant lie but I think these are classics and some of these bands and singers I have heard of and I like alot of their music some of that would be because of the advertisement and the logo- the identity of the band/singer.
I have heard of the following bands from this list and logos & Typefaces:
I think for these logos, for the Pop and the rock/ punk logos above I have previously mentioned, I think people like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift is aimed towards the younger female audience, when I say younger I mean like young children aged 7 and up. Linking park, 30 seconds to mars and Paramore I would defiantly say the logo is aimed towards the teens but teens who like pop rock kind of music, aimed for both genders I would say.
I would say people like Demi Lovato and Adele maybe aimed for a slightly older age range to Taylor swift and Katy Perry... perhaps say 13 and up who may find it more appealing. 1D I am going to say the audience is aimed for youngsters and teenage girls who begin finding celebrity crushes, kind of audience.
Nikki mana I cant help but stereotypically say the audience for her music/identity is aimed towards teens and male young adults I would say because of her type of music. I think singers like MC Fly, Coldplay and Maroon 5 is aimed more towards the upper end of our generation I would say are more likely to listen to their music, but you ever know, it all depends on the person and what people like to listen to I can imagine these kinds of bands particularly Coldplay to be aimed at a mixed audience really. Finally Ed Sheeran's logo and identity is aimed also to a varied audience but I would say looking at the logo younger people are more likely to listen to his music by looking at the logo but there again some of his earlier music I would say is listened to more by the older end of our generation. All of these logos I have mentioned I have found some inspiration for giving Blurt an Identity. Here is an image of other things about logos below. ![]()
The clever things that maybe noticeable in iconic existing
Weather I do this for this project for Blurt, future projects or if I am lucky to go further in Graphic design I would love to create an iconic logo or two with some clever playful concepts to it, this is very inspiring, I feel for thus projects and future projects to come. |
