Target Audience

Target Audience

Something what my tutor, Paul said to me was Target audience is a key element to things to consider with the field of Graphic Design. Which made me consider what the word Target Audience means in the dictionary, what target audience means to me, how I interpret target audience and the types of audiences there are and what to consider.

Brain storm for Target Audience
Here is a couple ways that google defines Target Audience, "a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed."

This google definition below is a better description for Target Audience.

"A target audience profile is simply a specific group of customers most likely to respond positively to your promotions, products, and services. Often, your target audience analysis will be based on specific factors like location, age, income, and so on."

Here is a definition for a Graphic Design Perspective also found on google, "A target audience is a specific group of people to whom a product, service, or brand is marketed in a variety of ways. ... In graphic design terms, a design product refers to various product or service image designs."

Here is a dictionary definition for Target Audience, "the particular group of people to which an advertisement, a product, a website or a television or radio programme is directed:

The new campaign aims to reach a target audience of consumers 45 years old and younger.the target audience for sth Pre-school children are the target audience for the show."

Found this defintion on this website below.https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/target-audience?q=Target+Audience

I would define target audience as, groups of people in the population that a product, advertisement, Film & TV, leisure activities are aimed towards. for instance a poster on rock music would be aimed towards rockstars or fans of rock music.

There are many key things to consider for target audiences such as the following examples below:
  • Category- When I put category I mean as in children, adults, teens, OAPs etc.
  • AgeMeaning products/advertisement is aimed suited for different age groups like 0-10, 11-20,21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 60+ kind of thing.
  • People's Needs
In a graphic design aspect for that I. mean for if people are blind do posters in Brail, if people are epileptic, to not use flashing lights. Etc, I feel like a lot of what gets created for an audience souly depends on their personalities too.
  • Employability
This is a type of audience as if people will ask for advertisement for their companies, ie- self employed or business people etc.
Religion- meaning that there could be designs, products etc aimed for people depending on religion ie- if something is to do with Christmas or easter or even something relating to churches or cathedrals.
  • Tradition- people may design products and advertisement for traditional reasons ie- events like Day of the dead, Chinese new year Christmas etc.
  • Culture- Similarly to tradition, some things you design maybe aimed towards people around the world- IE brands like MC Donalds. that is aimed towards people across the world.
  • Types of people- when I say types of people what I mean by that is people's statuses, you know the typical what labels were given back in the school days, relating to our personalities, such as, Geeks, Nerds, Jocks, Spotaholics, artsy and creative, Brainy and academic, the punks and goths, the Gay pride etc.
There is some truth to that list and the things I have bullet pointed above these are things you would in the real world have to consider, but I also Personally, I feel target audience can be quite surjective and can be very controversial and it is hard to give something like a movie, a place or a book or music a specific audience really, because the way you have to look at it is to be more out of the box thinking, as in you can't second guess what someone may like or dislike- it is a matter of opinion, people's judgement and what their makeup is basically. In other words: I kind of look at an audience by person's opinion and perspectives these days... because though they say c4 is aimed for 16-34 year olds, you get older people watch programmes son it, cos they want to watch something different, you see children watch Simpsons! err children and young people these days would most likely watch horror movies or something at 12 knowing our generation, but.. the slur being by saying only ld people read and go to church and go gardening and stuff really I see target audience as a way to slander, patronise and judge the book by the cover and cover the gaps. I had a friend back in school who was always reading... he isn't old. so the worst thing to do ultimately is to guess to assume and judge a book by its cover, it is more what the person likes and dislikes- OPINION! what they like to listen to, their interpretations! Movies- anyone can like and watch a movie, there is nobody stopping you know an OAP lady watching a horror film same as a child watching a Marvel movie or a horror film, you see it depends on what they want to watch.
It depends on the product you're throwing into the public what the consumerism is really. Its another don't judge a book by its cover kind of thing to some retrospect call me a nerd but it is to some degree as in some cases you can be judging a book by its cover by just assuming and not looking beyond the horizon- like this clip, call me silly for putting it on here, it maybe irrrelivent but there is a point to this clip. With Susan Boyel and Britain's got Talent.
What I am angling at is People looked at her, and instantly judge which I get because that is the point of the show, one of the reasons why I cant stand it, but you look at her, and people in the audience are stunned to see her on there to say why you on here what can you do? she is on there because she has a hidden talent! look beyond the leopard skin! you know they assume she's too old sing and perform... but why? that's the target audience thing again if you think about it, to some perspective.

they thought she was the clown act because she was elderly and couldn't signer they condescended them and proved them wrong. What I am trying to say is everybody is different, you know if everyone was the same the world would be a boring place to live in, its like assuming only elderly people do the gardening and don't do running... in fact, there are some young people gardening and some elderly people running. Like I said target audience can be controversial it depends on opinion and what the product and consumer item is really, as I say to some degree there is truth in target audience but its a very salt and pepper way of looking at this subject matter, in my opinion.

it's like Like how I will be researching the Mr men, (spoiler alert!) anyway, a lot of people may say and have a black and white thinking opinion and say, urgh for babies for babies... yes maybe that was the intention, to teach them to read... but it's not always, what about the youngsters who grew up when they were being released, in 70's like bet if they read it in their 50's it brings them nostalgia. I mean for one... call me a big kid... but I love cartoons still, I still watch Mr Men... for the nostalgia. as I say I love cartoons, but I also love comedies and all sorts, so really it depends on the product as I say really. In this world, especially these days you have to give the public their way of choice, if you don't, you're purposely putting the spinning plates on the table by second guessing and making assumptions to what people will like and dislike based on their age, culture, their upbringing etc- yes realistically this can still be true some of it is right to assume and make a target audience for but I am trying to say to pick something specifically for a target audience can be a controversial matter as it makes the world's perspective on what they like and dislike as a dictated assumption in some respect.
What I am really trying to get across is target audience is essential for the world of design, for advertisement, product design, package design, motion graphics because you have to number one respect the client... therefore you have to respect the target audience also.

Here is more of what I have found on google, "A target audience is the intended audience or readership of a publication, advertisement, or other message. In marketing and advertising, it is a particular group of consumers within the predetermined target market, identified as the targets or recipients for a particular advertisement or message."

Which is helpful because it is making me think about who the affiance for blurt is aimed for and what am I going to do for the rest of the project. BecauseWhat I have mentioned on my brain storm is to do with who in which I think Blurt would be best suited for in terns of audience.

To which for But, considering this will be a new tv show we are advertising being about art and designers, I would say the TV show for blurt should appeal to the following people:
Artists
Graphic Designers
Designers
Authors
Illustrators
Art Students
Teachers
Art Teachers and lecturers
Art Gallery lovers
Creative people
Seeing as this TV show is supposed to be on Channel 4, it won't be best suited for the younger audience.
New comer artists and designers
People who like arts and crafts
Photographers

I would like to advertise it in a sense that blurt can be targeted at a variety of different age groups, by creating imagery that teens, children and young adults would get along with as well as incorporate some some simple imagery that the upper end of our generation can too get along with which means this programme would possibly appeal to other audiences as well as those in which I have bullet pointed.
