Logo Designs & Developments
This entry is going to be fairly brief, which will cover my response to feedback, show some test videos and research on a couple of artists by aboutlooking at Franz Ferdinand's work that Paul suggested to me for feedback as well as Roy Litenstein's work.
I will also be responding to another bit of feedback which Paul had also Verbally spoke to me about type and the Type point size.
Here are some examples of Franz Ferdinand's work below.

| Franz Ferdinand's Swiss style art |
The things I like about this piece is the different arrangements of the text as it is very Swiss style and abstract, the arrangement is very asymmetric, the point being I found inspiration from this piece by the creation with the casket player seeing as that blurts music I quite like that concept. I also like the concept of the red triangle being used for a backdrop as well as being used in the sense of being sound waves blurting out of the music player, I find that clever as the triangular shape kind of looks like part of a megaphone, with the music player being the rest of the megaphone, which is another clever concept, I think would be interesting to incorporate in this piece, I like this design and I would like the idea to come up with a logo design in this style. I would say the target audience for this peice is aimed for an older audience, aimed towards people from the age of 30 and up though I think people in their 20's may like the concept to this piece so I would say this piece of work could be aimed towards a varied audience.

| Franz Ferdinand |
This piece below was one my tutor told me about, with the text in a triangular shape, again in the Swiss style kind of effect yet the use of the triangle works well with the type as its created like a sound wave kind of thing in the sense that the person shouting Franz Ferdinand is being projected so from the beginning of each word the type is a small point and each letter after gradually grows bigger and bigger point to give the impact of yelling or calling the name Franz Ferdinand I like this effect because it works well with the image because the lady on the image is tonal and the text and the speech bubble is in colour, as well aa the text. Which makes the triangle and the type stand out. I also ;ili the fact the triangle shapes is like a spotlight but also like a speak bubble at the same time, Blurting the name Framz Ferdinand. I have found this piece inspiring after speaking to Paul about my logo designs I would say this piece is most likely to be aimed at feminists as a possibility considering it being a woman showing the sound of her voice. In terms of age groups would say this piece would most likely appeal to teens or people from the ages 20-30 I think are most likely to find this kind of work appealing. This piece I have found out is a design for an album cover for a band named Franz Ferdinand, this design was created on 25th September 2005, surprisingly more recent than I thought it being, by looking at this design I thought this design would of come around in the late 80's early 90's.
I found out from this website, that Paul suggest I take a look at, here is the link: https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/visual-arts/the-revolution-will-be-posted-soviet-street-art-at-the-frye-museum/t that this piece above is basically a recreated parody or in other words is very pastiche, which basically means the same thing as a parody, like they have covers and remakes of songs, the same applies with the notions to this piece by Franz Ferdinand, the original artist for this piece was in fact a Russian Solviet poster as the origin froths piece was in fact by El Lizitsky in the year 1921, after the Bolshevik Movement.

| Solvate Poster, Ed Lizisky1921 |
This poster here is the original image and design, it was an iconic solvate poster back in the day of 1921, demonstrating asymmetric proportions to the image, where the triangle is for example, I like this image as it shows someone calling something out in Russian by looking at the research link above I would guess too assume is something to do with governmency and propaganda. Seeing that this image has relevance on overthrowing their Government. This text is very disorientated the L is upside down and the N's are back to front, I can only suggest that's been done to create the shape of the sound wave/megaphone speech bubble of the lady calling out.
This piece is a mix of photography and printing, using a photograph of a Russian author, Lilya Brik. who was admired by many important men in the Russian solvate for being hard to understand and mysterious and she is known for her beauty and helped the talented become known and find fame and fortune. She had involvement in silent films in the year 1918 and she became an importance to Russian Formalism futurism in literature and art in 1910 but I think think the ultimate reason as to why she was featured in this poster is the fact that in 1920 she directed films, 'Jews on the land' and a parody on bourgeois cinema and became a trend for LEF groups and Russian Dada and constructive art--she became the iconic inspiration to Russian avant-garde writers, artists and film directors which I would say is why she's the chosen person on this poster.
Here is the website where I found information on Lilya Brik: https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0109280/bio?fbclid=IwAR1FViEvLbgVvGPrJ-7eS-D_FakdmNVs-uC03olBSPqkBpqOIwQAzFl9J1A
On this poster design I found out there is meaning to the colour scheme that it relates to the Russian Solvate movement, showing modernistic abstraction along with lyrical realism, to capture the eye of its audience and get the audience thinking finding it easy to remember, because this poster is striking using an appropriate colour scheme. I really like how abstract this poster is, particularly with the Swiss style element to this design which came around originally in Russia in 1920, and therefore was a trending technique in graphic design at that point in history, and I like it, as it makes audiences pay attention and it intrigues people because of it's asymmetric arrangement.I love how they used the black lines almost in the same of an M to create a sound wave kind of effect. this poster defiantly shows a geometric frying with a combination of photography also. which I like this effect of using photography and a geometric design layout.
I would say the purpose of this poster is very political and therefore the target audience for this piece I would say is towards an older audience, people who like Swiss style graphic design this design would also appeal to as I haven't got a clue as to what this poster says but I can see a purpose with the girl calling out in a megaphone like retrospective I can understand the visuals to the image as opposed to knowing exactly what is said on this poster. I would say for an age range for this piece that would most likely appeal to is peopled aged 20-60 seeing as its a quite political kind of concept in this design, though I would say the people with in the 20's-30's would like this poster for the Swiss style asymmetric designs as they're more likely to like abstract designs.
Here is another parody/ pastiche on the original poster design from the solviate from 1912, but a much more contemporary aesthetic, this poster design has a much more vibrant look to this design, still using the mashup of photography and print components to this pastiche. Picking a photograph of Beyonce singing one of her songs called who run the world? I like this because when she sings the song, she kind of softly says who run the world? and then out of the blue blurts out Girls. This here is the song that this poster is based on for those who don't know: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=VBmMU_iwe6U&list=RDAMVMVBmMU_iwe6U
I find that concept clever as it shows some key visual communication, like the poster is responding to its own question I like the fact that Redon have referred back to the original poster design I also like the fact they chose an iconic person to the nation almost a pop art concept to some retrospect seeing as Beyonce' is an iconic person across the world... most people are going to know who tis singer is, as soon as I looked at the Illustration with Beyonce and girls I straight away knew it was Beyonce and the song title before even reading the read of the poster information, I like how he's gone with the same concept as the original for the image arrangement, creating imagery in a similar style, using some of the same colour scheme and techniques, still using the colours white, black and red on the left side of the image, I think that concept wires well, I also like how there is a more emphasis on the triangle with the type saying girls, meaning it looks like a literal sound wave, I like how they put the triangle half over the microphone Beyonce is holding as it looks like a megaphone and she's blurting the word GIRLS so this piece does make sense. Difference also being the fact that this piece hasn't got a political historic representation of this parody piece of the original, as this piece seems to be just trying to advertise and promote Beyonce' as opposed to there being any political association to it, I feel anyway.
I love the effect with the yellow triangle being used as emphasis on the sound waves. if you look at the edging it looks like a zig zag and in some abstract kind of way looks like lightning strikes and you sometimes use that effect on cartoons or on abstract art like this poster for instance for emphasising an action, showing some movement. In terms of a target audiance in terms of the music as Beyonce's music is pop music, some of which is the sort of music you'd hear in a club... or on the radio, so I would say this music is aimed towards a younger audience from ages 20-30, as id say that because she became an iconic character I would say from the 80's-90's years more so yet she is still iconic to this day in age also, she is a more contemporary celebrity to feature on a poster, I feel people are more likely to find imagery of Beyonce' more appealing to Look at on a poster partly because of her popularity and high social status but in terms of gender, I think ladies are more likely to listen to her music as it is pop music, just something I could imagine girls/ladies listening to her sort of music, as its quite feminine protagonist.
I also think this poster in terms of a graphic and historic perspective, I could see this poster design being aimed towards feminists seeing as the photograph of Beyonce' is an iconic woman, similarly to on the original piece as apposed to it being Lilia it being Beyonce' as a contemporary iconic female therefore I would say feminists, maybe people who liked the solvate original piece, will like a modern take on the Russian Swiss style, asymmetric format as a parody like representation. I would say as a graphic design perspective I for one personally like this take on the original base line of the poster design its much more contemporary, very pop art kind of imagery, I love the Swiss style art, so I would even say in terms of the graphics on the image that for an age group id say it appeals to young female adults in their 20's-30's like me. I would also suggest the upper end of our generation that likes the Russian Swiss style graphics may like this poster for the format and arrangement. Basically anyone else who grew up listening to Beyonce' I think would appeal to the most in fairness.
Logo Designs and development practice
Here are some logo designs inspired by the works of Franz Ferdinand below.
This piece here is very similar to how I draw imagery, in the comic style, abstract way. I like this piece as to os simple but effective, in a sense it is fairly similar to my piece on Blurt, as another word for Blurt was Call and the girl is calling some one so she could possibly be Blurting.
On here I tried to obey Pauls's feedback about making the type size a point or two bigger in the speech bubble only thing I think I may of slightly mislead on was the concept of the triangle concept, accidentally as the it turned from a triangle megaphone to a speech bubble. On this page of designs I was experimenting with colour, seeing what colours work with what variation, I would say the bottom 4 are aimed towards a younger audience, which you'll learn from my research on Channel 4 brain storm that C4 is aimed for an older audience, so I've had to have a rethink on the design concept, which I have funnily enough came up with an idea.
You'll see a little teaser on this video of colour changes, use of different edits and effects, this video is just 3 seconds but it gives you a generic idea for my experimentation purposes.
| David Redon 2014, Beyonce' |
| Here is another Blurt Logo Design idea |
This is just a digital development of the design idea I did the animation/hand drawn sketch, which like I have previously said was inspired by the works of Ferdinand but this design is created in a pop art comic style, similarly to the work of Roy Litenstein which is an artist I like because his art style is very similar to mine, here is some of Litenstein's work below.
Here is a test/animation below:

| Water colour and acrylic paint
Again this was listening to some feedback from Paul as I do remember him saying to me he wanted to see a logo design or two painted... so err I took it upon myself to attempt painting this design also, all I can say about this one is... I tried. Though this was also to show various ways of designing a logo using different mediums, so it helped in that retrospect and this image it has a lot of different textures with the paint details which gives that unique touch to this image as opposed to using illustrator or pen and colour pencils.

Here is some examples of Roy Litenstein's work below
|
![]() |
| Crack, Roy Litenstein |
The majority of his work is very 1960's orientated one of the reasons I can tell is because comic books were huge and when pop art became a booming trend because of his work and his work is very vibrant with a lot of colour, which I would say the 1960's decade was a colourful decade, like the swinging 80's were. This piece I like because there is a lot going on in the image, maybe I could of potentially done something like this with the text like CRACK how he's done that, but, there was a reason as to why I did the text on my design the way I did, this imagery is very strong and very powerful and defiantly lets a few blurts out.
![]() |
| POP!- Litenstein
I love the way Litenstein has created this piece, how he used a simple typeface and it still being able to stand out with the 3 dimensional uplift with the black around the text saying pop, but I really love how he has interpreted the word POP in this piece with the backdrop as the background looks very action pact and makes the text look powerful and strong, this is something I want to try and play with- with the word Blurt and the channel 4 in the future animation tests and experiments along the way.

| More of Litenstein's work
Now this is one piece I think my work is very much alike in the way he has drawn the character in the image, a lot of his work like this and other examples below, are strong because its an emotional piece as you can see it is an emotional piece because of the background of the image looks like the girl in the image is trapped and falling into rock bottom and experiencing that sinking feeling which I am guessing is what Litenstein was trying to show on this piece seeing as the girl in the image is drowning. Point being this piece is inspiring me for my work as this image has a lot going on with it in a subtle way which I like. This image I would say would suit he target audience to those who love comic book art and like comic books, I would say the people most likely to enjoy this sort of art is people who grew up back in the 60's era and people like I, I would say the target audience for this really is aged 10-40 kind of age I think would like this kind of art.
|
![]() |
| Litenstein's Pop Art
This piece I like, I can sense there is a lot of tension in this piece by looking at the characters faces I can suggest by looking at this work that the girl is unhappy and looks insecure and the man looks as though he's got full control of her, it looks a bit like a relationship gone pair shaped, if I'm not mistaken, which I think Litenstein has depicted well in this piece with the character's facial expressions and the extra details in the background, this piece again I would say the target audience is towards those who grew up in the swinging 60's and against hose who like comic style art, I would say the in terms of age groups are 10-40.
|
I would again say the target audiences for this piece is towards a more feminine audience stereotypically speaking seeing as the image is of a lady, (For feminists, may like this type of work) I would also say people who grew up in the 60's seen as that's when Pop art was popular so in that case id say people who are 50-60 years old...I would even say us younger generation also seeing as we like our comic books too, but again it depends on what captures the eye of people as everyone is different so it depends on the person in fairness.
Looking back at Litenstein's work with Pop art, I came across an artist whose typographic work has a more contemporary variation to his kind work, in a sense this work she has completed is much more contemporary and has a lot of abstract imagery within it, this artist being called Morag Myerscough, who creates art that engages its audiences, with its use of bold colours and abstract pattern design and typographic design. After looking back at her work I would class her as a modern day or the current day Litenstein. Her work has a very experimental aspects to typography, and pattern work in a very contemporary way, Here is a link to one of her websites where you'll see what I mean: https://www.designboom.com/tag/morag-myerscough/ could she be the next Litenstein? could she be the British Roy? to be honest with you, I don't see why she couldn't be as her work is very uplifting, very abstract and designs her typographic work in a similar aspect to Litenstein. here are some examples of hr work. But difference with this one is Litenstein focused on print and comic and magazine art, with Morag, she looks at pattern and typeography but creates imagery on objects such as walls, buildings almost like a mural kind of thing which makes Morag's art different. Heres some examples of her work below:

This piece I like. I find this piece clever with the artist hiding behind the word see, as in to say, "see me" yet the word me stands out which I like that because it almost pops out at you and honestly if I was to walk down the street and I saw that... I think I would find this interesting and I would be intrigued by it because if the black type jumping out at me, as well as the geometric pattern work, so yes this person is well in truly the contemporary Litenstein I feel because of her contemporary approach to her abstract artwork. I love the fact the word see is covering her face as it is almost like the word see is either a hidden disguiseable mask kind of thing or it is her wearing glasses so people would ultimately see her. I think this piece is aimed towards a younger target audience for the use of bright colours, geometric shapes and pattern work... I think younger people are more likely to enjoy this kind of artwork because out has a bit of a street art like quality to it that you would find in modern and contemporary art I feel. But if I was to define the audience setting for a specified gender I think the pride community would love this kind of piece as part of their message to the world is for people to see them for who they are not for who they pretend to be... same for the piece below... eye see. but point being this piece if it were too attract the pride community then this work can have a varied audience. I think these images will attract the eyes of both man and woman because of its out of the ordinary abstract quality to this kind of work, something in which Litenstein created in the popart movement in the 1960's era.
This piece is very abstract, I like the 3 dimensional aspect of the type and I really love, how on the blue billboard on the top right and on the bottom right centre where they have played with white space on the words "and" and "all day" For example, as I find this a clever approach and design technique and it makes you want to look into the design, the thing I love so much about this work is the fact it is still legible despite it being negative space because of the use of contrasting colour to the backdrop as the 3 dimensional back shadow of the lettering used as part of the use of playful negative space. I also like the simplicity of the colour schemes for each sign with using as fewer colours as possible on each board yet using different colours per board, giving the colourful bold and abstract simple aesthetic.

This here is some recent work created to show appreciation to the NHS as a mark of motivation for saving people's lives whilst going through this pandemic, here is the link below:
https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/health/coronavirus/collaboration-artists-say-thankyou-leeds-nhs-staff-massive-billboard-project-2532353
This piece automatically has my respect after seeing what the purpose was and who this piece was aimed towards, Seeing as this piece on a bill board was a special tribute to frontline workers whilst going through this pandemic, I would say the target audience is most defiantly aimed to the NHS workers national health services, policemen, postmen, retail workers etc but mostly to the NHS , who I have a strong admiration and a lot of respect for as they're going through a tough challenge to save lives which they do on a daily basis but at crisis point because of this pandemic, of many people at one hit.
This piece defiantly has a abstract. element to this design I love how they have the words striking out in a 3d way so the yellow text stands out over the other colours used in this piece in the sense of readability and legibility. I really like how the stripes behind the word you is going through more than one billboard to emphasise the word you. I like the use of abstract and Swiss style imagery I do love how the text Is facing two directions meaning that the diagonal pieces of text is being written at the same direction. I can see the contemporary Litenstein poop art culture into this imagery, despite it being abstract and full of vibrant colours. I personally love this piece! Clap and Praise to the NHS.
This work by Morag is somewhat similar to some of the ways how I like to work creating patterns, being experimental with typography and playing and experimenting with colour... I love her abstract art considering I am one who also does cartoon and abstract... out of the box kind of work I can relate and understand some of the purified hidden meanings to some of her work like the see me one and the eye see. I find her work inspiring and hope to add some abstract contemporary pattern work into my work also.

I then showed Paul these designs and had this for feedback. This is what was said on slack below. Me, Morag Myerscough
Eye See, Morag Myercough
This piece here does almost convey a sense of Litenstein's work saying that because of the use of typographic elements in this piece, but has a much more contemporary look to this image, with the element of 3d abstract pattern work in the backdrop and the 3d typographic element which Litenstein I feel had missed on but I think his typographic work as also strong because there is a lot of dynamic action going on both within the text and the background which is the same technique that both the historic 1960's pop art and contemporary typographic art for both Litenstein's work and Myercough's work. I think with this piece has the target audience for younger people. I would say that because of the use of abstract colours, the simplistic pattern and typographic arrangement- I think young children are most likely going to find this piece because of the simplicity and the image being easy to understand. I would say this piece is going to appeal to both genders, but really it depends on personal preference and what people like and dislike of course... but I think the age group this is most likely going to attract is ages 5-16 as because of the sensory thing with the use of different colours and because of the concept of the piece saying "eye see" this piece looks as though to say look at things in a different light kind of trying too turn things round and look at things in different perspectives kind of movement to it.

This link tells you how they created this piece, why they created this piece and who its aimed for.
The target audience for this piece is actually mentioned on the video, they mention in the video, that they do workshops with the young people from youth groups, the inspiration for the wording is from poems that. Luke Morgan and young people have come up with. " we want it to be open and friendly for people" suggesting that this audience for this piece is for anyone and everyone but mostly under the influence of young people I feel seeing as this was done as part of a workshop.

| BLURT!
Now this design I can really get along with, but I drew myself as a comic character in a similar style to Litenstein and put that within the type, to give my type a unique aesthetic to my work and I tried to bring some life to this piece, I think has worked in a much netter way, after taking some inspiration on how Litenstein does his backdrops whilst still keeping Ferdinand's base line idea also as I wanted the type to have the Swiss style look to it so the text for Blurt is asymmetric- hence to why the image is still the same. I will do another entry on how I designed the imagery which is in the text as I did this well after the logo designs but only recently come up with this design. I wanted to create my own comic style art and put that within my text saying blurt because I like the concept of comic art and I really like Pop art as an art style seeing as it is similar to the kind of art style I can work with.
I feel this piece has much more edge to it and looks far more sophisticated. I think the audience for this piece is aimed for a older audience than the imagery on the page before this design (with experimenting with colour) As I think older people are more likely going to like this design style more, it is more sophisticated the imagery is much slicker, has more Graphic aspects to it, as I really like the use of the black and white imagery within the text, I think it works well and corresponds with the back backdrop and I personally think it works well. I hope to see some of this used in some of my bumper work and animation tests. I hope I can get away with using that as one of Blurt's identification labels in my future animation work.
(I will explain more as to how I created the comic like imagery.)
I like this design much more as I found inspiration to put characters into the lettering from the more recent marvel idents. like this one below. Which I have already put this clip on one of my previous entries but I found inspiration to put imagery within the text from this 2016 Marvel Ident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cag0Kkqn-0A
This video here is a little component video based on this design idea above, this component is a little test teaser video I hope to possibly feature some of in my animation work.
Enjoy! |
You'll see a little teaser on this video of colour changes, use of different edits and effects, this video is just 3 seconds but it gives you a generic idea for my experimentation purposes.
You will notice also on this logo design I have taken and responded to Paul's feedback the best way I possibly could by Re arranging the type so the text was a few points bigger so it is legible and does a similar effect as to Ferdinand's Swiss style work. As I wanted to try and incorporate a Swiss style abstract element to my logo design as I liked the idea of Blurt being the word to call out.
