Notes on Michel Gondry's Music Videos: for white stripes video.
These video clips below were the music videos I looked at for my research. Suggested from my feedback.
This music video contains a lot of lighting and graphically shows recursion with the use of pattern of the triangular patten work reoccurring quite frequently using the colours, red, black white and green yet every time the sequence repeated itself there is a slight added feature in the sequence- ie about half way through the video there is an elephant appear in the sequence which if you watch the pattens and background closely you'll spot it, a more accurate clue its on 3 mins 9 seconds of the clip, I have grown to like the randomness in this video, I like how they used the elephant image for two purposes, 1st making it look like an outfit on a lady from a distance and then the other being the elephant itself, a lot of the subtle randomness has purpose in the sense that it works with the patten and the sequence, and I do notice every time the patten repeats itself there is something new added to the sequence, which I really like, what I like more is you have to really look into the sequence to see the subtle additions to the sequence, there was a section where if I am imagining things... see that's something else this video does is make your imagination run wild... but I thought I saw a monkey on a skelington's body. It makes you interpret the video in different perspectives, where its so abstract, its rightfully allowed-- this is something else I found inspiring with this piece. I even went as far s to go on about the colour scheme for this video saying that they've used the green to captivate the skin colours, almost like an X-ray kind of green, but a very pale green where we see flashes of a new sequence patten kind of thing flashing on the guitarist's skin and on the drums. The use of working with red and black I think works well together as they're both powerful colours but create a strong effect . There's a bit of a strong use of the colour red, with the guitar and drums-- red maybe a significant colour to the white stripes... it makes sense for white to be mixed into this kind of video considering this band is called the white stripes... but I like the use of paradox colours with the black and white, there's a vast difference with light and dark colouring in this video which gives dynamic for the music video, it also works well with the tempo of the music.

7 Nations Army, Gondry
I find with Gondry's work with White stripes the majority of his music contains the colour scheme, red, black, white and pale green, which I have found in his other video (Hardest buttons to press) which I will explain in a few seconds. Like in this illustration, which is footage from the video.
This video is a good example of reparation as like what I have put on my notes above, that there is a lot of repeating image for example there is a scene on the video I love more, is the use of the drums where they're going in and out the train, using the instruments as a visual representation of people. There was another section I liked purely because it looked good but there was a section with the drums where there is a circular patten as in they're in a circular kind of pattern and the transition in that is where there is a beat, the circular patten would move. You can see the use in the stop motion very well (if you wonder what I mean I am referring to the section near the end of the clip) I have noticed the motion graphics is very repetitive as is the music as for this video there is no singing it is just drum and base sounds so there's a rhythm, you could say the motion happens to a beat, so one form of movement to one guitar or drum sound, for example if I stepped to a sound of a clap, its sort of that concept but- of course much more advanced, in my opinion. I also liked the part with the man going down the stairs with the drums and guitars, like every time you hear a sound/beat the character goes down a step.I love how every action is following the pace of the music. I find this clever and I think it works well asa piece of motion graphics, I found myself glued to the video because of the effect the graphics has on it's audience, it is very engaging- I have found inspiration of this footage and I hope for my animations to have a similar effect.

Hardest buttons to press, Gondry
Now this video/clip is I am pretty sure this is the reason why this artist was suggested to me in the first place... I did a stop motion animation using figures and 3d animation... and I used LEGO for some of my animation I am saying this because in this animation... it is entirely created with lego bricks! Creating abstract patterns and imagery with The Lego pieces, which is clever and I hope I could perhaps include some of this within my animating work. I like the countdown from 4-3-2-1 I felt because of this piece being lego based I saw the simplicity to it and I think that worked well, I think the patten work works well with the music also, which is something else I like about his work- he seems ti create the unique but make it work well with the music in a dynamic way. That is something else I found inspiration for with Gondry's work is how he creates work that compensates the sound-- to create something dynamic.

Fell in love with a Girl, Gondry
All in all after seeing these videos in terms of target audience I would say this kind of footage is aimed for the hardcore rock lovers, the people who have rock music in their veins, those types of people, I would say punks as a possibility may like this kind of music, as a stereotypic perspective, though having said that I quite liked the music also, particularly in the top two videos below so I don't think I am allowed to stereotype... so therefore I think the music 's audience is suited for people inter teens to late 20's are most likely to enjoy this kind of music... which rolls me onto the graphic perspective, where for this term for target audience in that sense I would say would be aimed for an age group from ages 20-30, I think the older side of that target audience may appreciate the motion graphics more in the video as well as the music. I would say this work is appealing to both man and woman- I would say that especially now as everyone is different and will have they're likes and dislikes to anything- its what makes the world less boring and makes us human- as they say... each to their own! Though having said that the video, fell in love with a girl-- is all abstract and lego orientated so I would say lego is aimed for many audiences, full grown adults are like big children when it comes to lego sometimes, teenagers who like construction and abstract patterns would like this video and children as they're most likely to love lego because its constructional and they're most likely to use lego.
Here are some of his other music videos Gondry has worked on below:
After seeing this video, It occurred to me that there is a lot of repeating imagery and the video itself contains a lot of motion graphics as this video contains a lot of dance video containing a lot of visuals and motion graphics to accompany it.
There are a lot of different dancers in this video and what you'll notice if you watch carefully, where the music is repetitive, the more you hear the music and the beat, the more movement goes on and more people miraculously enter, I maybe sounding like a spoil sport for telling you this, but watching the video it may make you appreciate it more, the concept of this video I see it as a dance pattern/sequence almost presented in a physical theatric kind of way, in the sense of recursion and repeated image... there's examples where characters in the dancers in the video are divided in different categories and do the same routine in their group category repetitively, basically people are wearing different costumes to represent each culture around the world, but each group has a different routine. point is as the music has a change of tempo more people are moving in the image, they're basically walking in a circle which makes sense seeinng as this song is called around the world, which I am also guessing is why there are different groups of people, to visually represent different countries around the world and they're walking around in circles to show the world moving in a rotational sense. I really like thatconcespt as it makes visual sense to the title of the song. For example, something I came across when writing my notes is there is a section at the beginning of the video where you find a small circle of people's movements and the movement progressively builds up the music builds up on the tempo.
The target audience for this music I would say is very disco, very disco tech, almost R&B (Rhythm & Blues) raving kind of music, I could suggest that by the fact there are flashing lights like a disco kind of scenery anyway, the I would say this kind of music is aimed for an audience aged 18-30, basically the age group that like to rave and go clubbing... though in terms of the graphics aspect, as they're flashing lights and the motion graphics is exiting and action pact, with a lot going on, I would even say it may attract the younger audience, like children maybe aged 5-12 too as well because there is a lot of action and there is like I said flashing lights which younger people like sensory things, so I would say this kind of video is quite varied for it's target audience and can be suited for both genders. I can't see this video being aimed towards a specific audience in terms of gender.
Around the world, Research Notes
Around the world, Gondry
The story behind this music video is a girl walking into her world showing the world that she's her own boss kind of thing and in a mind of its own. anyway this video is a pure representation on recursion and this is a fairly obvious display of recursion, but I think its only obvious if you really concentrate and pay close attention to the motion graphics, that this video works like a repeating loop kind of thing as you'll notice it more about half way in but the girl in the video walks into her world but seeing her world, starts from walking out of a shop, walking into her world, in a circular motion, then as soon as she returns to the shop a duplicate shows up and comes into her world. Almost like she's realising what's around her.
Like I mention on this mind map/research notes below that each time a clone appears each lap, imitating the exact movements as the previous clone. it sounds confusing but if you watch the music video on the link above you'll understand what I mean. The music is very repetitive, you will notice that there is a Corus line saying, "won't you come? come... come into my world..." as soon as it hits the blue shop a clone joins into her world. Every time she walks past the blue door, the course line begins. This type of recursion I like, I find it quite clever using the technique of duplicated motion picture, which I would like to try and use within some of my future animations. Anyway, to my final point for a target audience to this music video, the song is very softly sung, its got that repetitive pop music kind of melody to it yet kind of a catchy ring to it, therefore in that case I would say this song is most likely to appeal to the eye of a younger audience seeing as I would categorise pop music like this to a younger audience, I wouldn't go as far to say younger, like children because it is unlikely for them to know who Kylie Minogue is so I would say the audience for this kind of song is mid 20's to late 30's seeing as they're more of a likely audience to know who Kylie Minogue is and I think would liken this song, I would say the female generation in that age category are more likely to listen to this kind of song, but in terms of the motion graphics aspect, I would say by watching the video itself, that it would occur to that age category mid 20's late 30's though I would even go as far to say men and ladies who have grown up listening to her music, but for the imagery I think men may find the video appealing seeing as a fashionable girl is centre of attention in the video. There is a lot going on in the video within a very basic and simple narration yet it somehow links and works well together. I find this use of recursion inspiring and the concept on making a story based on a simple narration but with a lot going on within a simple story.
