Corona Vs the World Animation.

Corona Vs the World

This animation is basically a current affair effecting the world, in many different ways, this pandemic has affected Many people. I wanted to create an animation based on something I as a person am going through showing what the year 2020 is like for us beings.

This piece has some humorous aspects to this animation but also has some serious points to this piece also, one to show a point and convey a message but also make people enjoy watching a short animation based on a current issue across the world.

I will reiterate that seeing as this animation is about our current affairs across the world, the audience for this clip is aimed to a general audience, basically anyone who is going through this pandemic, needs encouragement or to be cheered up or just wanted something to watch.
I can't lie to you, creating this animation was my way to process the current situation and personally has helped me make some sense to Covid 19. I feel this animation will impact many people therefore I feel this audience should be aimed to almost anyone.

OAP's- if they're bored and haven't got anything else on the telly, something for them to watch before the 6 O'clock news.

People in the mid ages- (I say mid ages I don't literally mean mirages, like the medievals, I mean people who are in their 50's sort of age) Who may want something to watch if the football or Eastenders isn't on the telly.
30's-49's- They may watch this if they come across this animation on any media they may use just as a quick flick through kind of thing
ages 10-29- May watch this animation for a bit of entertainment, they may like the characters in the animation and may find an understanding to the story behind the animation, who may even understand the messages I am getting across with this animation. Plus with the humorous side, it may tickle people a little bit depending on their type of humour.
5-7 year olds- I can't lie I would say they're unlikely to fully understand the concept to this animation but they may understand parts of it and enjoy it for the animation itself. I would say this age range is the youngest audience I could possibly see watching this animation.

In terms of gender I would say this animation is aimed towards both genders. As it is supposed to be a message in the animation which is the generic ones being said across the nation in the recent days, the whole wash hands, self isolate and stay safe. Which you'll see when you watch the animation. I didn't feel this animation needed to be aimed towards a specified gender as this piece is very open and generalised really.

The types of people I feel are most likely to watch this animation are the following:

  • Families, with young children.
  • Key workers, who may want something to watch.
  • Doctors and Nurses, any NHS worker, working on the frontline.
  • Supermarket workers
  • People who are self employed or working from home, if they're sat watching TV.
  • Teens, May come across this video on different types of media formats.
  • Students or my fellow peers.
  • Wannabe animators
  • Anyone feeling down in the dumps about this pandemic
  • People who maybe disobeying the rules

Anywho, I would admit I created this animation a couple days after the UCA closed down because of this corona virus. I wanted to create an animation inspired by this global apocalypse. I feel it works well seeing as we are all in the same boat, all crossing in the same ship, having to isolate I figured I may as well create an animation, enabling me to get to know the adobe programs further in my own way, in my own space and in my own way, why not create this footage.  I cant lie but to admit this piece was inspired by several news readings on TV, blogs and reports on the Corona Virus all over the internet and media so there was a lot that has inspired my ideas for this piece, for instance, this below is where I found my research to help with my understanding of the Corona Virus Both primary and secondary sources which are as follows:

Which, After recently speaking to a couple friends I know (Outside the UCA) one who is working in a supermarket has said how mad it is with people panic buying, how they're restricted amount of people in the shop at once.
Another friend of mine helping out at the NHS, saying they're pretty much rushed off their  feet, they're doing well but struggling to cope with the situation.
Finally another friend of mine working at a local care home part time has said he has to be careful about being around the people he's helping out at nevus he's looking after the people most venerable to the virus.

Anyway, moving swiftly on, to the imagery I have used to create my animation: Corona Vs the World. I chose to go for a cartoon abstract approach seeing as that is my kind of design style I like to create characters son they are simplistic, abstract but you still know what they are, here are examples of where this occurs.

Imagery & characters for Animation

Man coughing, shoppers & NHS Nurse

On this page are imagery featured in this animation, Corona verses the Nation.

Shoppers, Zombies & Earth
Again, the imagery featured on this double page spread are part of this animation.

My characters for the animation
On this page below is imagery I have included for  my animation in which you will come across during this entry of my blog. I made an arrangement where I arranged my characters in a collauge like fashion.

The final animation will feature the following:Zombies: As a bit of a dramatic exaggeration for the word apocalypse, but in a sense of wordplay too because people associate apocalypses with Zombies so I used the idea to draw Zombies in my animation, to exaggerate that the Corona Virus is a Global Zombie apocalypse, I was trying to use a unique and creative approach, so that my animation could be more exciting and appealing to the younger audience as well as people who like watching films or animations with some cut throat animation as well as a bit of humour to the film.Shoppers with and without a mask: characters who in the film like our people in the world are panic buying with everything being normal, you know people doing their everyday shopping, then shoppers with a mask when things turn out of the norm, with people wearing protective gear whilst shopping.People coughing: catching symptoms of the Corona Virus, with a thermometer next to the person. Covering the symptoms of the Covid 19.
For this animation after doing some further researching relating to a various range of animation techniques and styles for this animation I wanted to use a varied amount of techniques and processes.Such as the following:

  • Using both Time lapse and manual filming. Depending on the footage I record.
  • Meaning that there are sections in this animation you'll see I have used the time lapse mode for sections such as the  loo roll and the tap part of the animation, seeing as that action for the that section of the animation was continuous and made more sense to use the time-lapse mode.
  • There are other sections in this clip where using the manual mode is best suited, like the sections in the animation required short movements.
  • I have used the style of traditional and digital drawing for this animation.
  • Stop Motion is the type of animating I have also created with this video as each frame I have created is individual and shows subtle small movements within this animation.
  • Typographic animation, using scrabble pieces to create my footage.

Therefore because of this I have experimented with 2D animation, for my character design and backdrops, basically almost anywhere that you see flattened imagery or cartoon footage.  As well as experimenting with 3D animation for the footage I have previously mentioned, in other word for footage you'll come across that isn't flattened or drawn. I don't want to give too much away before you see my footage via video.

Backdrops for the animation

For my backdrops I have created on photoshop and Illustrator, I created the imagery on illustrator and edited the grainy look on Photoshop.

Supermarket before panic buying
Supermarket empty (After panic buying)

I wanted to create the backdrops almost like a before and after kind of thing seeing that the before is everything is normal still items in the shops and what have you, then on the image below is of the supermarkets all empty where people are bulk buying groceries in the supermarkets.

Video practise samples for

Corona Vs the World

These videos below are sample videos for what I filmed for my animation, some in which were just experiments that I didn't necessarily use for the final cut to the animation and some footage where I feel I will use for my animation.
For some of my footage in this animation, I have experimented with the direction I film the footage, how the footage I have made is put together etc.
For each bit of video footage I have filmed using IMotion, which is becoming much more of a handy piece of equipment for filming stop motion animation via my iPhone.

This piece of video footage is of someone with the Corona symptoms, the high temperature and the constant coughing fits.
I found the sound effect of the man coughing on Zap Splat and downloaded it to then add to my animation.

Panic buyers shopping for their lives
This piece of footage I intend to use for my animation, will feature preferably for the near beginning of the animation seeing as that was one of the first things effecting us during the pandemic, I feel this part of the film should be near beginning of the animation that I hope to put together for the final cut.

Experimentation with scrabble pieces
For this clip above, I liked the use of the scrabble pieces for the Star Paws animation and the previous animation I created, so I decided to bring it back for this animation too, as a visual effect as this animation will only have the sounds required and maybe some kind of background sound effects/music to back up the animations a silent movie, kind of thing. With the scrabble text doing the talking, in a storyboard kind of way.

For this footage is me using the scrabble pieces to be my voice in a unique way. Kind of commentating the rituals of this Pandemic apocalypse.
This will feature in this animation , the only really irritating thing is this footage was filmed at a different direction to some of  my footage meaning I had to rearrange the direction on this clip for the final cut so each part of the footage was all facing the same direction.

This clip below is an example of what I hope to include in the final film for the Corona Vs the world animation, I hope to put this footage around about half way through the animation on the final cut, after people are stock holding and hoarding groceries in all of the supermarkets, where I have used the scrabble pieces saying how the supermarkets have emptied.

The next two pieces of video footage below is examples of where I had to use 3D animation for this to work and where I experimented with the use of the Time-lapse setting on Imotion when I recorded this footage.
I hope to include this footage for the final cut to my animation, in which you'll find below.

This footage is  a recording of me washing my hands, as that is one of the things advised to all to protect and save ourselves from this apocalyptic virus.

This footage below is of me stockpiling all the loo roll till there was nothing left, which people may find some of humour within this. Which if you ask me is an accurate situation UK are going though, No more loo roll left = End of the world kind of thing.

The animation: Corona Vs the World

This piece below is the animation I have put together for my final cut for this piece of animation.
Which I have mentioned is about the current pandemic apocalypse the year 2020 is currently facing, which is basically relating to what we are going through as a nation.

(The final animation: Corona Vs the world)

I feel this animation has much better use of visual effects, at this point of animating I feel I have found a better understanding on filming my footage using Imotion, putting the animation together and a better understanding of editing using premiere.

In which I have come to grasp the use of playing with different composition when I am filming my footage within my animation, by experimenting with different blend modes which you'll come across and notice when you watch this footage above. The blend modes work simularly like photoshop, accept that on premiere I found that you can put edits to your video as opposed to a single Photo, the blend modes are basically the same as what you can put onto photos for Photoshop as you can for the videos on Premiere, but for video footage, these are as follows:

Normal- meaning what you see is what you get and no edits gets put into the image/video.
Dissolve- pretty self explanatory, this one puts a dissolve like texture to your footage.
Multiply- meaning your footage is seathrough like when you use it on photoshop, it is good for printing on transparent paper but in this case this kind of blend can kind of darken the image and put a little bit of an abstract kind of way.
Lighten- just lightens your footage.
Darken- Toner opposite to lighten, darkens your footage.
Hard light- is one of my favourite blend modes, because it kind of creates an abstract comic style to footage, but it basically uses bright colours from footage in an abstract way.
Hue saturation- basically works the same way as photoshop and fives a hue saturation blend.
Luminosity- Tonal footage to for the animation.
Divide- in obvious words does the opposite to multiply to your footage. It creates negatives basically. meaning if my image was black it be white and if my image was white it be black.

Anyway, on this video I decided to experiment further on these various different blend modes in the animation making the visuals on this animation more exciting to watch and more action pact.

The FX I have used my trusty friend Zapsplat, where I have downloaded the sounds of someone coughing and the tap running and for the Si-Fi kind of background music.

Yes out of all the animations I have completed so far I feel I have improved my understanding on premiere and animating in general. Although I still think how I film my animation could do with some work and I feel it be good if I made some sounds of my own or created my own FX also, so every bit of footage I create is my own footage.
I will hopefully achieve this in the foreseeable future.
