Channel 4 Target Audiance

Channel 4 Programs & Audience

For this entry, I decided to look up examples of Channel 4 programs as I wanted to find out the Target Audience for channel 4 and I have mentioned each Programme as to who I think would appeal most to, in terms of target audiences and whose most likely to watch the programme, considering people's age, the type of person they are, occupation etc.

Programmes on Channel 4

I have done this brainstorm so I get a better understanding on the concept of target audiance in terms of Tv and entertainment, also because I can start thinking more about target audience within my work as in: what age group will my animations best suit... what type of people would watch these programmes etc. which is basically what this brainstorm is.

I have learnt and researched that Channel 4 has a target audience for 16- 34 year olds, as quoted from this website: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/research-and-data/tv-radio-and-on-demand/tv-research/channel-4-corporation-remit-research-report "The deliberative, qualitative component focused on Channel 4’s core target audience of 16-34 year olds who had watched Channel 4 in the last six months."
Which is making me want to make my animations possibly suit that target audience as they're more likely to watch it, though having said that I have thought about challenging  my work on Blurt to suit other audiences also.Anyway, here is my research taken from my Brain storm of Channel 4's Programmes and their target audiences below:

Programmes and Target Audience for Channel 4

  • Gogglebox made in 2013-  which in short is a programme where random people across the country are watching programmes and programmes to do with current affairs and basically say their opinions on the programme in other words is filming families and couples watching the Tv. I would say is most likely to be watched adults because of strong language and the types of jokes and remarks they come out with- I would say both genders are likely to watch it and The age range I think I put 14-40 on the brain storm because go the strong language. Here is a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMe3vKEpWbY
Goggle Box 2013, still going

  • The Simpsons released in September 1990, is a classic, and is a well known cartoon comedy across the globe about a middle class family, bringing comedy, trouble and a story to their lives, they even made a movie! In 2007: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPG0MqIcby8seeing as this is a cartoon this tv show and movie is loved by families hence to why its a PG (Parental guidance) I do think teens and adults are most likely going to enjoy the Simpsons more so.
The Simpsons, 1990- Still going

  • Naked Attractions 2016- I wrote men on the brain storm because I thought it was just naked females, though thinking about it there'd be naked men also therefore I would say its attracting to both sexes, I would say this programme's target audience is mostly aimed to teens to adults in their mid years. Though I would perhaps say maybe body builders may enjoty a programme like this, Here is a trailer I can't lie there is probably a lot of nudity: https://www.channel4.com/programmes/naked-attraction/videos/all/s1-ep1-behind-closed-boxes/5050516348001
Naked Attraction 2016- Still going

  • Hollyoaks 1995- is a soap series, similar to the Eastenders and coronation street, but one for a slightly younger audience, having said that I did say the audience for people that are in the Mid age and young adults as this soap has fair amount of episodes of going clubbing, drinking etc. Here is a trailer for Hollyoaks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwdqZTIiXaY
Hollyoaks, 1995- Still going

  • Crystal Maze 1990-95- This show is basically a game show where a group of random people are in search for crystals by doing tasks and challenges in the maze, along the way. I would say the audience to this show is to game lovers, though I would say for a target audience I would say is aimed more toward a younger age range. here's a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t-_iyP4ruU
Crystal Maze, 1990-1995

  • Great British Bake off, 2010- is a tv show where both celebrities or people like us go on a competition to bake, the first course to bake bread and second course to bake a cake of some kind, here is a trailer with James Blakly- Inbetweeners actor on Bake off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anN1VNk02fc I would say this programme is aimed towards students, as they may use this programme for inspiration to cook and feel better about not being the greatest cook on the planet, Wannabe chefs, for a similar reason as to students- to learn, I put OAPS because I understand they quite like to bake (Stereotypically speaking) Though having said that after seeing this clip... I would say is aimed towards a varied audience such as us younger adults, who are fans of the Inbetweeners, but I would say Bake off really is aimed towards a varied audience. They have even made a junior bake off (for a younger audience)
Bake off 2010- Still going

  • Friday Night Dinner 2011- Is a comedy series with a family who on Fridays meet for dinner, with the mum just wanting one normal Friday without chaos from the family, along the way. here is a trailer of the newest series: series 6 premiered in Begnning of April) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTGlu1n4m6M In terms of target audience I would say is aimed towards teenagers, young adults that are in their 20's-30's I think would also enjoy this series.
Friday Night Dinner, 2011- Still going

  • Come dine with me 2005- is a programme where 4 contestants cook a 3 course meal for each other in the space of a week and best cook wins kind of thing. In terms of  target audience I would say come dine with me is aimed  Here is a trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpzqTxgNf60
Come dine with me, 2005- Still going

  • Inbetweeners 2008-2010- Is a British comedy serise where four lads grow up in the typical life of sixth form in secondary school, there are many sexual references and strong language so this wouldn't be suitable for the youngsters and I am in doubt that the senior end of our generation would enjoy this kind of programme, but besides that I think this programme is pretty much suited for anyone else, I think this programme teenagers and adults would most likely enjoy and watch this programme, I can't lie this is one of my all time favourites. Here is a trailer below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=950-4oaMQgY
    The Inbetweeners, 2008-2013
This series went so well that it became a movie, here is trailer for that too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om_HyEy-yog And a sequel... we won't talk about that!

    Inbetweeners movie: 17 August 2011
"Ooo Friend!" - Will, Simon and Neil
24 hours in police custody, 2014- Still going

  • Count down 1982- is the first programme released on Channel 4 and it is a quiz show where you have to spell words with X amount of vowels and consonants almost like scrabble or make up a number sequence of some kind. here is a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-FjIhVL744 I say this programme is aimed for the academic people, the know it alls, the ones who know their maths and English, though thinking about it I would say this programme is aimed for students and maybe teachers or anyone who wants to learn new words and mathmatics. I would say OAP's are most likely to watch this programme as they're most likely seeing as they're retired and is something on in the mornings.
Countdown, 1982- still going

  • Peep show 2003-2005- I haven't heard of peep show until doing this research so I don't really know what this one is about, so here is a description from google: "College chums Mark and Jeremy share a flat in Croyden. Well, actually, unemployed Jeremy lives in a room in Mark's flat. Although these pals couldn't be more different, they find they're facing a lot of the same issues as they make the adjustment from university life to the working world" here is a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo9NzNcbKPA I wrote a target audience on here based on the title of the series in fact I haven't wrote anything but I could guess this series is aimed towards people who are in the gay pride community.
Peep Show, 2003-2005

  • 4 in a bed  2010-  This trailer is 3 in a bad but basically the same as 4 in a bed,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj63ciG5l0c the target audiance for that I put couples, as this show is basically about couples sleeping in another couple's home, its a similar kind of programme to come dine with me apart from the fact that this is to do with people's accommodation as apposed to people's cooking.
4 In a bed, 2010- Still going

  • 8/10 Cats 2005: this is basically a comedy Mickey take show and a quiz show on the current news and affairs, I don't really watch this but I said the target audience for this show is for quiz lovers, teens, Micky take likes and id say the age range for this kind of show is aimed for 18-24. Here is a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTnQ7Wqxorc
8/10 Cats, 2005- Still going

  • Sunday Brunch 2012: Is basically a programme that comes on, on a Sunday morning where they discuss the weekly affairs, the latest foods, music etc and have guests talk about their work, therefore I would associate this show's target audience to be varied but I would say people are most likely to watch this show chefs, music composers older families, younger families, people who want a lazy watch telly Sunday. Here is a trailer for below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJiBn--iE-s
Sunday Brunch, 2012- Still going every Sunday

  • Kitchen Nightmares- 2007-2014: This programme is about Gordon Ramsey seeing the lives of chefs who own failing businesses within the cooking industry and try to turn their lifestyles around. Here is a trailer for Kitchen nightmares:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKRNRz6VK_k  I would say this programme's audience  anyone who has cooking as a hobby, people who like Gordon Ramsey and want to hear him rant, Chefs... of course and I didn't write this down but maybe even entrepreneurs and business people seeing as tis programme is to help businesses get back on track. Seeing as this programme is most likely to contain strong language I would say this programme is suited to almost all audiences apart from the OAP's who may not want to hear swearing or children for the obvious reasons, a bad idea to have a childhood upbringing to swear.
Kitchen Nightmares, 2007-2014

  • Coach Trip- 2005-2006: Coach trip is basically a programme where a tour guide named Brendan takes couples in a group to a country and experience a holiday together on a road trip so they travel across the country and every so often the couples fight to win by voting the least popular couples out the game to try and win a luxury holiday abroad. Here are a couple trailers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7LI31LcjDc (and this next trailer is more modern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfNUVfQaAbs)

(So still going but on E4)

  • Father Ted 1995-1998- Unfortunately I haven't seen this programme so I can't tell you what this is about, so here is a summary from Channel 4 catch up: "Fame beckons for Ted when Terry MacNamee phones up to interview him for 'The Television'. Unfortunately, the filming at the local beauty spot coincides with the arrival of Funland on Craggy Island." Here is a trailer for Father Ted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZqHYzdwLG o I had the guestimate for target audience based on the title of the programme and on the brain storm I wrote Teens at an age 18-24 but seeing when this was made I figured this programme could possibly be dated for our younger send of our generation so I may say this target audience maybe better suited to mid age kind of population from ages 40-60.
Father Ted, 1995-1998

  • Grand Designers 1999-I haven't seen this programme. but by the name I can guesstimate that this programme is an art programme to do with designers, artists, etc very similar to what our made up programme Blurt is going to be about. Anyway, here is a better description found on google:"Grand Designs: The Street Kevin McCloud follows ten households constructing their own homes as part of creating a new street in a self-build project, Graven Hill near Bicester in Oxfordshire." Here is a. trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvNTl60hu9E For a target audience seeing that this programme is about construction I would say would be aimed towards builders, carpenters, plumbers, architects, people who specialise on 3D design etc, not to what I thought it be, as I had the guesstimate that the audience for this programme was towards the creative side of our nation, the people whose into their arts and crafts and design.
Grand Designers 1999- Still going
