Brain Storms & Research Part 1: Graphic Designers & Film Makers

Brain Storms and Research

For this entry, I will warn you, is quite a long entry, with many references, so apologies for baffling you to tears! Anyway, here goes nothing, I have decided to have another read on the brief, for the Blurt project and I have decided to look through the list of options for the types of people we were allowed to research, there was many different options such as the following:

  • Painters
  • Illustrators
  • Graphic designers
  • Poets
  • Set designers
  • film makers
  • Authors
  • 3D designers
  • 2D designers
  • Actors
  • typographers
  • Photographers
  • fashion designers
Well basically any type well known artist or designer, so out of the list set for us on the brief I decided to whittle down my research base down the four different categories out of the list above. I can't Lie and say it wasn't easy for me to decide what things I wanted to research, I whittled it down based on the type of design I like most, design types I have a passion for, as for me for obvious reasons, I will pick Graphic designers... how couldn't I?! I love the idea of researching other Graphic designers who have gone out into the big wide world and made a name for themselves. I also have a side hobby Photography, so I felt it was interesting to look at Photographer's work. I have picked film makers because we are doing a motion graphics unit, I felt researching film makers was a good shout, besides I have for ever and a day had many questions as to how motion graphics and film making works, I wanted to research the box office big names for films, so I can seek inspiration for my own work. Finally, I can't lie and say I had a bit of a twist and turn for this choice between Typographers and Illustrators- that was a harder decision to make as through this course I have found a deeper love for type design, there again illustrators I feel is quite different and a bit of a paradox next to the other options i've decided to research, meaning that it may make my animation more interesting for the ident because of a unique element to my work. So I decided to go for Illustrators for the 4th option.

The first brain storm I did was my favourite type of designers: Graphic Designers... (Of course)

Graphic Designers

Graphic Designers Brainstorm

Saul Bass, who is known for creating motion picture such as Anatomy of a murderhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sA1en26sgM (A youtube video of his creation) Which is one of his best known pieces of Graphics, he has also created a posters to accompany it.
Saul Bass's poster for Anatomy of a murder
Like this poster above, for instance, based off his motion graphics- Anatomy of a murder, The thing I love about his work is how he uses his block colours and silhouettes to create a simple poster design, I think this works well.  Less is more, the use of two colours red and black, I think works like a dream.  I love how he has used his silhouette of the dead ma on the bottom right corner of the poster as the logo- I found that little thing clever.
As I have mentioned,  he is also known for creating posters, he created an astonishing poster design of the shining which I think just looks remarkable in my personal opinion.  Again it works well with the use of two colours.

The thing I am gathering with his work is that he likes to design posters with two colours, black being his most dominant colour with the other colour, quite often a bright colour like how he's done the shining as a backdrop and as part of the imagery within the T.

Saul Bass's Poster, The shining
Straight away I can tell Saul Bass's work is very iconic therefore would attract many types of audiences, but as a matter of opinion I think his work will attract the eye most for the age range from 20's to 40's as I can tell his work by the title of anatomy of a murder, isn't going to be suitable for a younger audience, same goes for the shining, because if you look at other examples of the film posters for the shining they are not child friendly and the film shining is aged 15 and up to watch it, which basically says it all.

  • Herbert Bayer, is a Graphic designer, printer and Photographer, who has done some well known imagery such as the piece with the Hand within the eye.  He creates alot of work in the Bauhaus style, with the use of abstract designs.

  • Such as this image below

    Herbert Bayer, Man crush
The thing I like about this image, named Man crush and the other stuff,  is that it is very abstract, very out of the ordinary and very out of the box approach to designing, I like how he has combined his Photography work with his Printing and Graphics into one piece to create something so unique that it works in its own rights.
I can see there is a Bauhaus connection to this piece, primarily with the fact this piece is very out of the ordinary, very abstract, which is one of the fundamentals the Bauhaus bought to the world of Graphic design, which I personally have a liking towards as I am a very abstract kind of designer myself.

Herbert Bayer, Kiosk for selling cigarettes

Now this piece, Kiosk for selling cigarettes was too by Herbert Breyer! I can instantly see a connection to the Bauhaus art style, from looking at this piece he has created the building in block styles similarly to the Bauhaus school, in an out of the box kind of way, which again, I think is clever. On this piece he has used the very colours you'd often associate the Bauhaus days with.

I really like his use of print and design on this piece.
I found this piece on this website:http://mondo-blogo.blogspot.com/2012/07/herbert-bayer-man-crush-and-other-stuff.html
In terms of target audience, I think Herbert Breyer's work is going to attract the eye of an adult audience and maybe attract the eye of teens or anyone who has a fondness of the Bauhaus days, this kind of work is quite a traditional kind of art style that is very out there in the Bauhaus days so I would say it would attract anyone who like abstract work.

    • Josef Broockman, is a graphic designer that specialises in the field of the Swiss Style he designs mostly posters, like these examples below. Which I found on Google images.

    Josef Brookman, Beethoven
The thing I like about this piece is the use of black and white , I like how he's played with negative space within his artwork. I feel even if I may not pick this designer I would like to have a play with black and white patterns and playing with negative space.

     Joseph Brookman, Stravinsky forther-burg

This piece is again I feel is very out of the box I like the use of blue and white, I hope to use a similar concept to this design within my artwork, in a motion graphics kind of way.
I think in terms of target audiences, I think this work would attract the eye to a varied audience, people who like pattern work but I would say teens and people in their 30's would most likely find his work effective.

    • Herb Lubalin, is a designer that specialises in the field of type design, I found quite a fondness to this type design, Herb Lubalin's approach to type design I feel is inspiring weather I choose him as one of the 3 artists or not his work is very inspiring for even just logo designs or ways I can incorporate some of his tactics in a similar way in my work.

Such as the following images below.  (I found these via google images)

    Herb Lubalin's piece: Families
This piece of typographic graphics by Herb Lubalin: Families. I like, it is simple and works well I love how he has played with the letters 'ili"in the word, creating a little family using tittles as the heads and the rectangles arranged at different sixes representing the mother, the foster and the child, its a clever play on words because the word says families so he's made a little family within the type,

    Herb Lubalin's Type design, Beards

The thing I like about this piece Is how he's given the man a beard by literally writing the word beard but designed to look like a beard. The thing I really like about this graphic designer is his use of playful type design, it's very unique, quirky and clever.

In terms of target audiences I feel his work can work for a varied audience, I feel it would capture the eye of teens and young adults the most and budding designers.

    The missing link, Herb Lubalin
I love how Herb Lubaliun plays with negative space in this piece and how he plays with text, because it took me less than two seconds for me to identify that says the missing link I think it is a very clever design approach. Which I hope to possibly try out for mane the logo design for Blurt.

    • Armin Hoffman, whose know a Swiss style graphic designer, best known for his piece called Giselle which I have seen in library books in the uni and found this image on google images.
    •  This piece Giselle, designed by Armin Hoffman, I can take is a poster of the ballerina Giselle, I really like this poster, how he's used the tittle of the 'i ' and the two strokes of white to depict the movement of the ballerina I find that clever and I hope to bring that into my work. I like the simplicity of this piece of work too, the use of grayscale is very effective with this type of artwork. I like the arrangement of the text, I feel it's quite a creative approach to this design, he has demonstrated a good use of Swiss style type design to his work.
    Armin Hoffman, Gisselle
For me I would categorise Giselle as an audience best suited to the OAPS, but I would say more for the female elderly audience, ages 60 and up really, as I would stereotypically guess to assume ballet will appeal into the eyes of the female OAP category most likely but having said that, I am a female myself and personally I can't imagine myself wanting to watch ballet at the age of 60. So really I can't say too much without sounding like a massive hypocrite in this matter
    • Carson, who is a magazine designer, who in my opinion likes to bend the rule of the grid, where he creates work that is very out of the box, unique, he creates designs in a. collage kind of way which does work for the use of magazine design as some magazines or catalos you come across are very out of the box collage kind of arrange.
      Carson, Lessons- Tes teach

This piece of Carson's is a very modern piece of Graphic design, personally as i'm a little retro in the designs I like, I like it to have some kind of meaning and purpose to the imagery. Therefore, for me this kind of design isn't my cup of tea, but as Mood-boards go that is quite a clever approach, because words are jumbled up and hard to understand, disposes the purpose of readability and legibility, which again personally I am not overly keen on myself but it makes people curious its seeing his ideas and his perspectives on the world on one piece of imagery.

In terms of target audiences, with Carson's kind of work I think is a matter of opinion, depending if people these days like the modern take of graphic design or if they're like me and like the retro kind of designs or designs with a meaning and purpose to it, but I would say it'll probably attract the eyes of a younger audience as although nobody knows what is going on, the image is very sensory therefore it will make people look! Particularly Youngers In my opinion, or anyone who likes abstract comic book designs.
Roger Dean, is an album cover designer and also well known for his type design and designed the Tetras logo.
    Roger Dean, Tetris logo

I feel the logo design for Tetris is very retro, vintage looking, the text is very blocky which works for the aim of the game Tetris, seeing as Tetris is stacking blocks together in abstract ways.

As you can guess by looking at the Tetris logo, His typographic style is very street art and has a very graffiti like style to it like this example below, for instance.
      Roger Dean's Type
Now this type design I like, it is very quirky, very outer space kind of feel to this piece. I like the blends of blue used in the text and I really love the shape of the lettering. Maybe I could try playing with the form of the type for an idea for an animation test.
Roger Dean's design for an album cover
This is an example if an album cover designed by  Roger Dean. it looks very abstract, which as I have previously stated I like retro abstract designs, I like the arrangement of this album cover.

Wolfgang Wingart, is a Graphic designer who creates collage work and is known for his layout design.
      Wolfgang Wingart's collaged layout design
Like this design above Ifeel is more of the type of collage design I have a liking to as opposed to Carson's approach as this type of colleague design I feel is out of the ordinary again but there's some Swiss style elements to this designer's work that I can get along with.
    Swiss typography, Wolfgang Wingert
I like this piece because I like the arrangement of the text, it is unique, out of the box, very abstract and it looks like a nice representation of him showing his voice to the world.

I love this approach of Swiss style typography! the way he's arranged the text is unique and out of the box I could gather where he's created new wave in a repetitive way he's showing the text in a wave sensation.

        Wolfgang Wingert, make it quirky
I like this approach because you can see what Wolfgang is trying to convey with the legible text saying 'Make it quirky, why legibility doesn't matter." he's trying to say in his work that posters or print designs can work well visually, because it's new, hip strange and again out of the box, I like this arrangement, it is simplistic, you can understand his message and he has arranged the text very well, I hope to use this as inspiration for my work.

I think with Wolfgang's work the target audience I feel is varied, from youngsters for the sensory reasons, similarly to Carson's but in this case I feel this is much more of a sophisticated arrangement so I feel because of that it may also attract the eyes of an older audience also.

    • Peter Savile, is  an art director, Graphic designer whose work is very colourful and abstract.
    • Peter Savile, Total

This piece, total is very colourful, I like how abstract the imagery is, it is vert lively with a lot going on in a subtle way. I love the playful typographic components to this piece, I hope to use these sorts of effects during my animation work.
    Peter Savile's abstract Graphic design
This image I found on google, by Peter Savile is very abstract, I'd say abstract with a capital A. I like his playful design styles, this piece is very quirky, its very patten like, this is a type of design technique I like, being into abstract graphic design.

With Peter Savile's work, for target audience, this kind of work is aimed towards a varied audience, could be youngsters, because of the colourful sensory kind of look,  people who like traditional pattern work maybe teens if they like abstract out of the ordinary kind of artwork.
    • Ken Garland, is a British graphic designer, best known for his graphic design work and photography.
    Ken Garland's Graphic Design
I like how Ken Garland has shown his identity by representing his country by incorporating the London Underground as part of his identification on this piece and how the text on the top left is written in the same colour scheme. This piece is quite good as although he has only used half of the shapes and  has cut the last letters of his name, this works well with the poster, its different you can tell what it says because of the captions on the top left anyway, I like that he's found inspiration for this design from the London Underground logo, but put his own spin on it.
      Ken Garland, Galt Tots

This piece Galy tots, I feel can come across as controversial towards feminists in away, but I quite like the image, I like how the text is arranged and how the girls are tipping the text to an angle.

I feel the target audience for this type of work would be best suitably aimed for adults in their 30's or 40's seeing as this piece could come across as controversial in my opinion I feel his work would interest the male population
Paul Rand, is a logo designer he's designed logos such as the IBM logoIkea logo and the ABC logo, using the Bauhaus 93 typeface!

      Paul Rand, Ikea logo

I like the fact Paul Rand has used colours that compensate each other in the sense that they're contrasting colours and the design of the logo is very simple and easy to understand.
      Paul Rand, IBM logo

The IBM logo is a unique way of designing a logo, using stripes looking like the  logo is half in the picture half isn't, I like the use of the white space, I feel it creates power to the blue rectangles used for the logo spelling the letters 'I, B,M'

    Paul Rand, A B C logo

I love the fact that the Bauhaus 93 Typeface is used for this logo! I had to ay it... as its one of the fonts I have a liking towards, anyway I like the simplicity of this logo, this will inspire me for my logo design for Blurt.

In terms of target audiences because these logos are for businesses, I would say the best target audience for these types of logos is aimed at an older audience or to anyone who is self employed and have a business of their own, in the employment audience.

    • Jessica Walsh is a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator. Who creates her work by taking photographs of people's faces and creating the typographic graphic design onto the photo, which I can't help but find clever and would love to try this kind of thing with my work.
      Jessica Walsh's Graphic design

The imagery above is some work by Jessica Walsh, here in which I can see she has used Photography, to take the photos of the person, I can't lie I absolutely love this type of imagery, I love the use of the Typography on the face, I really like this idea, I do hope to try this idea within my work! Spot on Mrs! I think the use of negative space on the image in the centre is clever, I absolutely adore the pattens and graphics on these images.

Jessica Walsh, Make your own rules
This piece, make your own rules by Jessica Walsh I feel is very strong I love the fact she has used a contrasting colour scheme, orange and blue work well as a contrast. I like the idea of using two people to create the test also.
For this kind of work I feel there is a varied target audience, I think it'll attract the eye to the female population. For once I can say I found these images very iconic and attractive myself. So I would say this kind of artwork would attract the eyes of the younger generation more than the older generation, burly because of the style of thew imagery they've very out there, very colourful giving the sensory kind of eye captivating feeling, the imagery in itself is very powerful and its making you listen, as the wording is very encouraging but bossy at the same time.

      • Stephan Heller  is a designer that specialises in Type design as we know he's the designer of the book,  Freehand typography, in which we had to reincarnate for unit one for the course.

        Freehand Typography sketch book
The type for this book is very simplistic, colourful and  arranged in a unique way. By the look of the book cover it looks like the target audience for this book is aimed for youngsters but to be perfectly honest with you, after studying bits from this book to create the front and back cover to this book Its actually aimed towards older students.

      • Jan Tschichold is a typographer and also designed the penguin logo you come across on all the classic books, the little orange logo with a penguin on it.

      Jan Tschichold Penguin moondboard
This is one example of a Swiss style piece of graphics created by Mr Tushicord. to which  the layout if the text is good, this is the type of mood-board I can get along with, too because the text is legible and arranged in a more sophisticated way than Mr Carson. I hope to create this unique Swiss style layout on some of my animation work.
          Jun Tschichold, The penguin books
This is what I'm talking about! The penguin books! The man who made the penguin logo on the classic books we see today, I like this layout because it is. simple and easy to understand, I can get along with this layout.

If I was to say target audience, I would say would be aimed towards the upper end of our generation seeing as they've grown up with reading. Though his work can be aimed for varied audience the piece above the collage looking at piece may attract a slightly younger audience as well because of the layout design.
      • Johnathan Barabroock, is a film maker and Typographic design, his typography work is very abstract and the imagery is very colourful.

          Johnathan Barabroock's Graphic design

This piece of artwork is a liking of mine, I love the imagery to it, it's very bold , simple but effective, it reminds me very much of the Rolling Stones logo. Its a very iconic piece! I would like to create footage of animation in this style... I can't lie!

        Johnathan Barabroock's Sydney
Now this is the type of Graphics I can really get along with! I love the colour scheme to this piece, the fact he's used fewer colours but in various tones and tints I feel works very well with this piece, it gives an iconic look to the image. I also love the layout of this piece, Sydney. its very simplistic, but also abstract. I hope I can
In terms of target audience, I think this artist's work is best suited and most likely to be noticed by Teens or adults in the lower end of our generation, or people who live life in the retro 80's era maybe for nostalgic reasons.

        Film Makers

        Film Makers Brain Storm
There are many incredible film makers that are known for creating the films we watch in the cinema in the back row, the people that make those films where we jump out of our seat, the films where we scream, laugh, cry and most importantly the ones who create the sensation of the well known films, Such as the following people below. I would now say as a graphic design perspective, I have found myself finding much more respect for movie makers in general, for their creations, for the makings of the movie, the actors, editors, the sound and FX people, and the graphics on the movies, but hats off to these people who make these films we sit and watch today.

        • Walt DisneyThe man whose changed the world of film! He who in which did the incredible thing and made most of he films we see today on Disney Plus, during our time in Quarantine, films such as: Mickey Mouse, Mary Poppins, Jungle Book, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh,Lion king, cinderella and Many other movies. basically those movies that puts a smile on everyone's faces. Such as these below.

        Walt Disney's films

For Walt Disney's movies, a lot of these movies were ideally aimed towards the audience of families, though In all fairness Disney movies have been created strength to strength through the decades, therefore Disney's audience I feel is targeting the eye of every age group! from the higher end of our generation (OAP's) to the younger end to our generation, I guess it depends soul on the film.

        • Quintin Tarine, is a film maker, best known for the recent makings for Once upon a time in Hollywood, Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill films.

Quintin Tarine, Once upon a time in Hollywood
In all honestness, I can't say I have seen this movie so I can't say my opinion or perspective as to what this movie is about, so I have found google's summary to the movie which is "Actor Rick Dalton gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950s television Western, but is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn't recognize anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth, his easy going best friend and long time stunt double. Rick also happens to live next door to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate -- the filmmaker and budding actress whose futures will forever be altered by members of the Manson Family."

Despite never seeing the movie from looking at this summary it sounds like its to do with someone getting into the life of Blockbuster Hollywood acting but has a drinking addiction. this does sound like a fairly interesting movie, so I can't lie but to admit I wouldn't mind giving this movie a watch.

        Quintin Tarine Kill Bill

This move Kill Bill I have once seen, its a very action pact movie, containing alot of violence in this movie. Here is a trailer below.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kSuas6mRpk

Seeing as I have seen this movie, I can say I thought the graphic details in this movie were pretty phenomenal, there were scenes in this movie that when I watched it I thought wow, this is quite an exciting movie, yet I would now say as a graphic design perspective, I have found myself finding much more respect for movies in general for their creation, the making of the movie etc as I have previously said. My interpretation of the movie is to do with a retired assassin decides to have a normal life, then someone is plotting to kill and the assassin finds revenge on the killer.

But here is google's summary which explains the movie much better than I have described. So Here is google's plot summary of Kill Bill, "A former assassin, known simply as "The Bride (Uma Thurman), wakes from a coma four years after her jealous ex-lover Bill (David Carradine) attempts to murder her on her wedding day. Fueled by an insatiable desire for revenge, she vows to get even with every person who contributed to the loss of her unborn child, her entire wedding party, and four years of her life. After devising a hit list, The Bride sets off on her quest, enduring unspeakable injury and unscrupulous enemies.

        Quinton Tarine Pulp Fiction

Sadly, I haven't seen this movie, therefore I can't specifically tell you what it is about, so here is a trailer below that gives you a summary to the film.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7EdQ4FqbhY

Here is a summary from google, explaining what this movie is about, which is: "Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multi-strand crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) ; his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) ; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) ; master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel) and a nervous pair of armed robbers, "Pumpkin" (Tim Roth) and "Honey Bunny" (Amanda Plummer)."

Though by looking at this trailer and description above, I can have a guesstimate that this movie is relaxing to crime movie, with hitmen as the main characters.
This movie was recommended to us by our tutor Paul, which in all fairness, I can't lie I would like to give this movie a watch. As a matter of curiosity really. By looking at these types of movies made by Tarrintino I would most defiantly say these movies are targeted towards people aged over the age of 18 I would say based on the descriptions to these movies. Though I think these movies will appeal most to the people who maybe in their 30's and to who in which has a strong liking for movies like these above, featuring violence, alcohol addictions etc.

        • Clint Eastwood is a film maker, known for making the following movies, Unforgiven, the good the bad and the ugly, The mule and Gran Torino. Which unfortunately I haven't seen these movies so I can't give you an opinion on these movies. Thinking about it now, I think It's safe to say, I need to watch movies more! Here are some trailers of his movies below.
Clint Eastwood, The good, the bad, the ugly
Here is a description I have found on google explaining the summary to this movie which is "In the Southwest during the Civil War, a mysterious stranger, Joe (Clint Eastwood), and a Mexican outlaw, Tuco (Eli Wallach), form an uneasy partnership -- Joe turns in the bandit for the reward money, then rescues him just as he is being hanged. When Joe's shot at the noose goes awry during one escapade, a furious Tuco tries to have him murdered. The men re-team abruptly, however, to beat out a sadistic criminal and the Union army and find $20,000 that a soldier has buried in the desert."

Here is a trailer for The good the bad the ugly, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftTX4FoBWlE

        Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven

Here is a description I have found on google explaining the summary to this movie which is the following; "When prostitute Delilah Fitzgerald (Anna Thomson) is disfigured by a pair of cowboys in Big Whiskey, Wyoming, her fellow brothel workers post a reward for their murder, much to the displeasure of sheriff Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman), who doesn't allow vigilantism in his town. Two groups of gunfighters, one led by aging former bandit William Munny (Clint Eastwood), the other by the florid English Bob (Richard Harris), come to collect the reward, clashing with each other and the sheriff."

In my opinion I feel the target audience is aimed towards the male senior category, stereotypically because I feel in that age category alot of the OAP men tend to watch movies like these above.

        • David Fincher, Is a film maker, best known for making films such as the following, Seven, Gone Girl, Zodiac, The game, Social network & Fight club. I haven't seen these movies although, I have vaguely heard of the movies seven and gone girl.

        David Fischer, Gone Girl
Here is a trailer for gone girl; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym3LB0lOJ0o

By watching this trailer this movie is about a woman going missing and husband is out on the search party to find her.

Here is a better description explaining this movie. (Found this description on IMDB)

Looking at the trailer to this movie, I am now considering giving this movie a watch. It looks very action pact and very eye captivating.

        David Fischer, Seven

By the look of this trailer I could give the guesstimate that this movie is about a person whose died from what looks like to be from some kind of curse, and main characters played by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman seek who killed the man and how to release the curse. By looking at the trailer I can't lie but to admit there was a section in this clip saying "Help me" on the window, at 46 seconds in on the clip: as a graphic design perspective. I really like this effect, I hope to include an effect like that using typography in my animations I will be creating.

Here is a better description of this movie which I found on my google search, "When retiring police Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) tackles a final case with the aid of newly transferred David Mills (Brad Pitt), they discover a number of elaborate and grizzly murders. They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills' wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is pregnant and afraid to raise her child in the crime-riddled city."

In terms of target audience I would say as these movies are quite violent and relating to crime they could be aimed towards youngsers... Just joking, no I would say they are aimed for people who like a horror/thriller, in terms of age group I would say any age above the age of 20 in a stereotypical guesstimate, though I would say mostly aimed for people who like murder mystery kind of movies really.

        • George Lucas, is a well known film maker, for his work and creation on the classic Star wars movie trilogy, back in the 70's as well as for the mankings of the movies, Indianan Jones and The Labrynth, which I can for once say in this blog I have watched and come across these movies.

        George Lucas, Starwars (Originals)

Firstly and foremost as a graphic design perspective the text on the beginning of the movie, I am sorry to say but... it needs work! It is very... justified. Which after studying this course, is something I will never get over! Like I said on a previous entry I had to turn off The Lego starters playstation game after 10 mins, because of the text at the begining of the game. I am sorry to say I am personally not a fan of the use of text in this movie, but what I can say is I do like the action in these films and I find these movies fantastic, particularly the first and second movie, but all three of these movies are good, they have some good uses of motion graphics which I hope to use these as references and inspiration for my animations I will create for Blurt.

In terms of target audience I would say this movie is aimed towards a varied audience, young people for the action, people in their early 30's for the storyline and people in the upper generation as they grew up watching it.

Here is a generic summary description that sums up Star Wars, which I found on a google search, which is the following:

"The Imperial Forces -- under orders from cruel Darth Vader (David Prowse) -- hold Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) hostage, in their efforts to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), captain of the Millennium Falcon, work together with the companionable droid duo R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) to rescue the beautiful princess, help the Rebel Alliance, and restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy."

        George Lucas, Labrynth

This film is absolutely glorious, I personally love it! not just because it stars David Bowie, showing the world his magic, but the film itself, the plot to this film is so ingenious, the characters in this film is great and I really love the graphics in this film, considering they would of used less modern technology for this film, I still find the graphics and motion graphics to this film absolutely astonishing!

The basic story of this film is a teenage girl is left to look after her baby sibling, but where the baby is such hard work she wished for the baby to be taken away, therefore its one of those where its a message saying be careful what you wish for and to not take things for granted. Anyways, as the baby gets taken away, the teen with a gang of friends met along the way in search for the baby, through a course of challenges in the space of 24 hours.

Here is a trailer to this movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2yd4em1I6M

Well this is a very brief synopsis on this movie I found on google, "Teenage Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) journeys through a maze to recover her baby brother (Toby Froud) from a goblin king (David Bowie)."

I hope to create my animations in this kind if technique. It would be interesting to create a narrative using mystical characters for an animation. I would say for this movie the target audience is aimed towards people from the age of 12 and up, there is so much action in the movie, its one I think a family would sit and watch. People that find action movies like this exciting.

Christopher Nolan, is a film maker, best known for creating the Batman films, Batman begins, The black knight and the black knight rises, as well as for making the films interstellar and Dunkirk.
Christopher Nolan, Batman, The Dark Knight

This movies one of the many batman movies, one of which is made b Mr Nolan, it's a live action variations of Batman, I can say there are alot of Graphics I was fond with with this movie. Here is a trailer below of the Dark Knight.

Here is a summary below I found on Google: "With the help of allies Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman (Christian Bale) has been able to keep a tight lid on crime in Gotham City. But when a vile young criminal calling himself the Joker (Heath Ledger) suddenly throws the town into chaos, the caped Crusader begins to tread a fine line between heroism and vigilantism."

        Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk

This movie is based on a true story, where there was a war in Dunkirk years ago, in the year 1940. I can't lie, haven't seen this movie also I can't say much about it sir here is a trailer explaining the film.

        Here's a trailer for Dunkirk, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-eMt3SrfFU

Here is a better explained summary to this movie, found on google: In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

I would say a lot of these movies by Mr Nolan I think the target audience is aimed for the older generation particularly Dunkirk or anyone who likes history and documentaries, though having said that he also created Batman into which I feel is aimed towards a varied audience after the age of 20, but I think people would enjoy it most in their 30's because of the storyline.

        • Robert Zemeck, is is a film maker best known for making the films Forrest Gump, cast aways, Back to the future, and a couple Christmas films.

        • I have unfortunately never seen this movie, but hope to change that very soon! From what I gather this movie is a comedy, about how the main character of the film has been bought up and has to decide weather or not he wishes to change his ways or not.
          Robert Zemeck, Forrest Gump

Here is a trailer to this classic movie, Forrest Gump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLvqoHBptjg

Here is a description I found from google about Forrest Gump

"Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright)."

I think for target audience I would say by the look of this movie is aimed for an older audience, I feel that people who are in the upper generation would appreciate this movie more I think. but I haven't watched this movie therefore, I can't really give an idea on specific age groups.
Robert Zemeck, Back to the future
Unfortunately I haven't seen this movie, but I know it is a classic from the 80's years, which contains a lot of science fiction therefore I can only imagine how much motion graphics are applied to make this film. There is no denying that I want to watch this movie!

Here is a trailer for the Retro classic,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvsgGtivCgs

Again I haven't seen this movie so I am unable to give an accurate summary, but from the trailers I have seen from it is all about si fi and science fiction, by the look of it. So, Here is a description of the film back to the future, for which I found on my Google search

"In this 1980s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the '50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents (Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson), and must make sure that they fall in love or he'll cease to exist. Even more dauntingly, Marty has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc Brown."

This movie I feel is aimed towards a varied audience, for the use of action, dialogue and narrative, but if I was to pick a specific age group I can see it pleasing most I would say people in their 30's/40's.

        • Ridley Scott, is best known for making the films, Blade runner, the alien films  and The martian.
        Ridley Scott, Aliens

I haven't seen the alien movies, though I can't lie but to admit I would like to, it is on my list for movies I should watch before I'm 30 Ha-Ha! Which sadly means I  therefore, can't give a good description of the movie, so here is a trailer to explain it

Here is movie description found on google, "After floating in space for 57 years, Lt. Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) shuttle is found by a deep space salvage team. Upon arriving at LV-426, the marines find only one survivor, a nine year old girl named Newt (Carrie Henn). But even these battle-hardened marines with all the latest weaponry are no match for the hundreds of aliens that have invaded the colony."

I feel this movie was aimed towards people who like watching science fiction and horror movies but for age group I would assume people in their 20's-40's I think men are more likely to watch this movie.
        Ridley Scott, Martian
This movie... Drum Roll please... I have seen!

In basic work, this movie is to do with a man in the USA, who was into Outter space and wanted to discover life on mars.

With this movie, there are many moments to which there are some fantastic graphics and visual effects applied to this movie to which I found absolutely fascinating.

Here is a trailer for the Martian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej3ioOneTy8

Here is a summary I have found on Google, "When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.

For this movie I think the audience is aimed at budding scientists, astronauts and anyone who likes science and live action. I would say this movie I feel older me would enjoy because you're watching someone go to mars kind of thing I feel anyone who grew up watching Armstrong going to the moon would enjoy this movie.

        • Ron Howard, Is best known for making films such as, Apollo 13, Rush, The dilemma and other movies, I have listed on the mind map.
        Ron Howard, Dilema

This movie I have seen before but not in a long time so I have forgotten what it's about unfortunately, so here is a summary from google: "Longtime friends Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James) are partners in an auto-design firm. They are hard at work on a presentation for a dream project that would really launch their company. Then Ronny spots Nick's wife out with another man, and in the process of investigating the possible affair, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. As the presentation nears, Ronny agonizes over what might happen if the truth gets out."

Here is a trailer for the film Dilemma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5EwYtPZxWQ

I think for a target audience I would say this movie would be good aimed towards 15 year olds and up but personally I don't think people beyond the age of 50 may not enjoy this movie, but you never know.
        Ron Howard, Rush

I have seen this movie, there are many visual graphics I enjoyed within this movie! Anyways, this film is based on a true story of a life between two rival racers, fighting it out to win.

Here is a much better description to Rush, what I found on my google search: "In the mid-1970s, charismatic English playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) share an intense rivalry in Formula 1 racing. Driving vehicles that are little more than gas-filled, rolling bombs, Hunt and Lauda burn up the track, all the while pushing themselves to the breaking point of physical and mental endurance. Meanwhile, the women (Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara) in their lives can only watch as both drivers risk death with every lap.

Here is a trailer for Rush: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzNbGH1oZJc

I would say these types of movies are aimed towards an older audience, one who likes a remake of a true story, race and formulae one fans, I think men who like going to pubs and things are most likely to watch and enjoy these movies.

        • Frank Darabont, is a film maker, best known for creating films like Nightmare on Elm street, The Green Mile and King Kong.
        Frank Darabont, The Green Mile

I have seen this movie a few times, its a very emotional movie, which is to do with life in prison, in the times of capital punishment and the electric chair, where we find a man who is actually innocent gets arrested for what looked like a crime, for saving people's lives, potentially whilst harming himself in the process.
Here is a trailer for The Green Mile: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctRK-4Vt7dA

Here is a google search summary for the green mile: "Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) walked the mile with a variety of cons. He had never encountered someone like John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters. Coffey had the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the demeanor. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Paul began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls."

I think the target audience for this movie is suited for the older generation, or maybe even the younger generation if they want to learn and watch a film that relates to history. People who like a movie where it's emotionally touching but has a lot of meaning. Typically I would say alot of people my age may watch this movie but I think people who are aged 50 and up would appeal to them more so.
(Though I would highly recommend a packet of tissues for this movie if you are one to cry over movies!)
Frank Darabont, Nghtmare on Elm Street
Here is a trailer to the nightmare on elm street: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCVh4lBfW-c

This movie I have seen before, the once. It is a horror and thriller movie to do with a creepy man about to frighten the lives out of teens.

Here is a better summary to the movie from google: "In Wes Craven's classic slasher film, several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams -- which, in turn, kills them in reality. After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends' parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) solve the puzzle before it's too late?

For this movie, in terms of target audience, I would say this would appeal most to those who love a gothic horror movie, more for the age of 20/40 I can see watching this movie.

        • Martin Scorsese, is known for creating movies such as the good fellas, Hugo, the wolf of wolf street and Cape fear. I can't lie but to admit I haven't seen any of these movies so I can't give an opinion or description to these movies, But I hope to watch these movies at some stage.
          Martin Scorsese, Cape Fear

Here is a trailer for cape fear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsXIpnMRu88

Here is a summary description from google for Cape Fear: "When attorney Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) knowingly withholds evidence that would acquit violent sex offender Max Cady (Robert De Niro) of rape charges, Max spends 14 years in prison. But after Max's release, knowing about Sam's deceit, he devotes his life to stalking and destroying the Bowden family. When practical attempts to stop Max fail, Sam realizes that he must act outside the law to protect his wife and daughter in Martin Scorsese's remake of the classic 1962 thriller."

Now seeing this movie is a horror by the title, Straight away, I would give the gestate that this movie would most likely be watched by people in their late teens but it depends on who likes a horror film and who doesn't for instance, I can't see an elderly lady watching a movie like this to be fully honest with you.

        Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Here is a trailer below, for Hugo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv3obL9HqyY

Here is a google summary for this movie "Orphaned and alone except for an uncle, Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) lives in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo's job is to oil and maintain the station's clocks, but to him, his more important task is to protect a broken automaton and notebook left to him by his late father (Jude Law). Accompanied by the goddaughter (Chloë Grace Moretz) of an embittered toy merchant (Ben Kingsley), Hugo embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of the automaton and find a place he can call home."

For this movie I would say is aimed for a younger audience by the look of the movie, I reckon people from the age of 10 and up would watch this kind of movie.
        • Stan Lee, was an amazing man, sadly taken away from us in the year of 2018.        He was a very well known and much loved film maker by most of the world, he has made over 20 Marvel films with more to be made, which are still going today, thanks to his presence. the movies he has created a lot of people love and admire, many of us are still watching these movies to this day! They are movies such as: Iron man movies, Thor movies, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America and many sensational movies! Which the graphics to the movies are absolutely OUTSTANDING!! I have found much inspiration from these movies I hope to show with in my animations I create for Blurt, all to be revealed in good time. Here are examples of Marvel movies Stan Lee made.
        Stan Lee, Marvel Movies
As there are many marvel movies, instead of showing you every single trailer ill show you the 2016 Marvel ident as a trailer. Not only for that reason but I do also find the ident as an inspiration for my Blurt project, here are example components from the movies Mr Stan Lee has made. Enjoy!

For the marvel movies, it is aimed to a varied audience, children for the animated films and maybe the live action for the action pact effects, to people like us from the age of 20 to 50 for the story, narration of the films, the action and the thrill f the marvel movies, and maybe even some OAP's may watch these movies, I would say these movies are a diverse audience.

        • Peter Jackson, is best known fir making movies such as the Hobbit and The lord of the Rings as well as other movies I have listed on this brain storm. I can't lie I haven't seen the hobbit or the lord of the rings, but I don't think I can sit still for hours watching these types of movies in my opinion. But you never know. which does mean I therefore can't give a true description to wither off the films, but here are descriptions I found on Google with a trailer to the films below.

        Hobbit, Peter Jackson

        Trailer for the Hobbit:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTSoD4BBCJc

Here is google's description to the hobbit: "Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) lives a simple life with his fellow hobbits in the shire, until the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) arrives and convinces him to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor. The journey takes Bilbo on a path through treacherous lands swarming with orcs, goblins and other dangers, not the least of which is an encounter with Gollum (Andy Serkis) and a simple gold ring that is tied to the fate of Middle Earth in ways Bilbo cannot even fathom."
Lord of the rings, Peter Jackson
Trailer for the lord of the rings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V75dMMIW2B

Here is google's description to the lord of the rings : "The future of civilisation rests in the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it. But fate has placed it in the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring and steps into legend. A daunting task lies ahead for Frodo when he becomes the Ringbearer - to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom where it was forged.

        • For these movies made by Peter Jackson, I would say the target audience is aimed for either OAP men or people in their 30's who may have an inner geek inside them. it all really depends on what people watch really.

        • Stephan Speilburg, is a classic among the film makers industry, he has made many many films such as Jurassic Park and Jurassic world, Who framed Roger Rabbit?, Gremlins, Warhorse, Indiana Jones, ET, Back to the future and many other classics! I have seen a couple of the films but I want to watch others also! I can't lie.

        Stephan Speilburg, Jaws
This is one movie I have unfortunately never seen But would love to, here is a trailer of the movie Jaws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1fu_sA7XhE

I have seen this trailer before and just by looking at this trailer, there are lots of motion graphic key components I would inspire to include in my work.
          Stephan Speilburg, Jurassic World

Now this movie, Jurassic world I have see but sadly only the once, it's a very good movie, which is based on the spinoff series Jurassic Park, accept instead of being in a park they explore the dinosaurs and the jurassic action in another world as opposed to a park.

Here is a tailer of jurassic world https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFinNxS5KN4

There are many many motion graphic scenes in this movie I find absolutely astonishing and very inspiring, I hope to create my animating footage in a fairly similar way.

These movies, made by Mr Speilburg I would say a lot of his creations are very action pact, dramatic, a lot of thrill though I would say these films he makes are most likely to appeal to people aged 20 and up and I feel stereotypically more men would watch these kinds of movies, but again it depends as to what people choose to watch.

          • David Yates, is a film maker, many would love and praise, as he is best known for  the makings of the Harry Potter and The fantastic beasts movies as well as some other movies I have mentioned on my mind map.
David Yates, Harry Potter (All eight of them!)
The Harry Potter films are loved by many across the globe, in which was cleverly  refurbished into films based off JK Rolling's books. Which is about Three students and not just any students, students with powers, go to a secondary school full of other mystical and magic powers whilst seeking quests along the way whilst watching them grow in each movie.

Here is a trailer for the Each of the Harry Potter movies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViuDsy7yb8M

Here is a much better summary for Harry Potter from google: "Adaptation of the first of J.K. Rowling's popular children's novels about Harry Potter, a boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own. He is summoned from his life as an unwanted child to become a student at Hogwarts, an English boarding school for wizards. There, he meets several friends who become his closest allies and help him discover the truth about his parents' mysterious deaths."

David Yates, Fantastic beasts and where to find them
The fantastic beasts and where to find them,  is basically a prequel of the Harry Potter movies but made years after the Harry Potter movies for some reason. Probably due ti the reasons of popularity and the narrative for HarryPotter working so well, they can introduce prequel films.

Here is a trailer for the Fantastic Beasts; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViuDsy7yb8M

Here is a google summary for the movie:

"The year is 1926, and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident, were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds."

I would say, in terms of target audience for both Harry Potter and the Fantastic beasts and where to find them, can be arranged for a varied audience, from families, teens- both male and female, these who in which are most likely to watch Harry Potter, those who have read the Harry Potter books and grew up with Harry Potter, Maybe adults are likely to watch these movies too because of the narrations another exciting action pact types of movies to watch. Again I would say it all depends on what the person watches and what pleases the eye of the public.

Now movies like these, Harry Potter and fantastic beasts, are aimed towards almost all different age ranges and can appeal to almost anyone, only on a matter of personal choice and people's opinion and what they wish to watch
