Storyboard 1

After a second honeymoon a failed journalist grew an extra arm.

The Amazing story teller
(Book)

The idea of this task originally was to collaborate with a couple of our classmates, to create a 30 second animation featuring one of our ideas given to us selected by random in the book Kieth got us to look at, to help us build our outside the box thinking and to come up with some chaotic story from the book. Called The Amazing story teller

This book really does furfil it's word- the amazing story generator, it really is Amaing. I think It's brilliant! It helps you come up with ideas and concepts for stories which it basically gives you a character, a situation and an event- ie- yesterday, last week, night before Christmas etc.

This book has taken me wonders on this project, it enabled me to let my ideas out and let my imagination run ragged, no matter how good, bad, ridiculous, out of the ordinary they are. Ive succumbed to learning, its what you do with them is key. How one can make a couple sentences and concepts work together too create an exciting narrative, as I'm finding through this project. Where we as a group, to get used to working and collaborating with others seeing as when you go out into the real world weather you're a graphic designer or not, nine times out of ten you're going to be working with other people on projects or working for people, to create collaborations any who, we were given the freedom to let loose with some random bogus stories, chosen by flicking through this book. The amazing story teller.

  •  My argument is, if the book helps come up with conceptional ideas, this book works like a dream. I felt it was very useful on my behalf, As for me I feel this book fulfil It's purpose- basically giving you a prompted guide, for a story concept, then you've got to figure out the rest of it amongst ourselves- focusing on the beginning, middle and end, the fortunately and unfortunately of the story etc.

  • This essentially brings me to my next point, where in our small groups, we had to pick three concepts at random to create a narrative, like this example below.

  • Which is where we got the concept to the on After second honeymoon a failing journalist grows an extra arm. In my group consisted of Alicia, James and Saffron, where we started creating a storyboard based around this idea and created a narrative for it.
These are the notes we came up with as a group for this animation.
It basically just says what the concept of this animation is and it's basically just our storyline we created from the amazing story generator.
  • Which you'll see below we came up with the concept of a just divorced widow man trying to get through life in his little office in his bedroom writing a biography, but failing as a certified journalist- but he realised there was more in the outside world than meets the eye and got hitched yet again- off they go to a honeymoon in the Bahamas, where there was recent announcements of unexpected dangers to Mother Nature. The seven seas becomes a toxic beckon- this being based on what the guy wrote in the beginning sketch,  and realised what he writes actually ends up happening to him. Anyhow, he and the newly married mrs took to the beach, she being busy topping up her summer tan, he decides to take the plunge into the toxic seas and has an epiphany that his writing style is like Voodoo as he then grew an extra arm, the Mrs saw and ran off arranging another divorce- so we were back to square one. there wasn't always a happy ending but least he had an extra arm

A Quick storyboard- which was bit jumbled up on the order of the story-as
caption/ frame 1 is on top right besides that the rest is on the right lines.

Storyboard sketch: use of pen and pencil- as at the time you had no other resources on you.

  • This storyboards above, was inspired by the book Kieth's designed and put together (Arthouse Cinema) How he used cartoon characters to create a storyboard in such a simple way yet its easy to understand and comprehend, this is what I wanted to create with my storyboards, which I feel I have somewhat achieved this.I'd say the  only things I wish I had done giving the time is to maybe digitalised the imagery and improve the quality of the imagery and well put it together like a comic strip,  similarly to what Kieth has done with his designs in that book.
  • In addition to that, on the day we were given this project, our tutors Paul and Kieth, gave  everyone in the group a blank sheet with eight small rectangular boxes the size of frames, guessing it was to represent the 16:9 ratio which you'll see below also includes section for Action, Dialogue and FX (sound effects)

The storyboard guide given to us by our tutors

  • Being given this sacred sheet I feel was very helpful and found beneficial, because between you and me, I  am terrible at drawing straight lines... not got the steadiest hands in the world (The boxes) besides it was just easier and more convenient, be rude not to use it- am I right? (Rhetorical question)

  • So, here goes nothing, I decided to recreate a storyboard based on this concept using these sheet given by our legends, Paul and Kieth.

This I feel looks much better drawn, in this format, as I feel it visually shows my thoughts well,  by stating my thoughts and ideas processes in such a vast way. This storyboard I've created is very sketchy but represents the concept of my story well.

My concept design I feel is a similar style to British storyboard to designer and illustrator Leighton John  (Image On the lefthand side) accept his storyboard creations are just mind blowing, his illustrations are much more cleaner, all I can say to that is wow! (You could say I was lost for words when I saw this) Whilst with y storyboard is quick drawn very basic caption illustrations, I feel maybe I could of done a storyboard of this concept like this but we only had a week to do this activity, so sadly I wouldn't of had much time on my hands to do so.
But I feel this design is good as although it is sketchy you can see visually what's going on and  well reminds me traditionally what comic strips were like back in the day, in black and white, But only difference with this piece by Leighton John is I feel just by looking at the imagery the target audience maybe aimed for the older end of the teens or adults, who like reading and likes graphic comic books or mangas etc.

Which for this activity my animation wasn't the audience party intended for that age group, as I feel this piece is very cheesy and something that would appeal more to the eye to a younger audience, though maybe an older audience would like it as they're more likely to understand the storyline to my animation.

  • Despite all that I still like this style of storyboarding techniques and hope to learn from that design and maybe apply something similar to my storyboards, although the imagery looks like it were done with pen and pencil it almost looks like it has a digitalised look to it. Which I really like and hope to maybe try on future storyboard creations.
